I am finding this to be interesting and informative, even though I doubt I'll ever install a stereo in my car, and I might even have a go at fitting sound deadening now that you've taken the trouble to show how it's done to a good standard. Watching this as well. The stereo in my P38 is, to put it mildly, shot and i'd like to rip everything out and start again but have no real idea how, or even where to start. Actually, I only really need something to play pre-recorded stuff as the radio here is either all in Tagalog, Rap or Korean Bubble-gum "music". I don't really trust the locals to do a proper install, so I think I need to trawl the net for an easy "How-to" guide.

Even if the car isn't wired for modern din unit you can buy a harness to wire into the cars loom and convert it. I installed a full head unit loom into an mdf box recently to use as a stereo. I would recommend anything that will handle a 64gb sd card. More room than you'll ever need and easy enough to update. A good bluetooth unit is also really useful (for me anyway) Swapping speakers is a simple unplug, plug in process generally. You may have to crimp a spade terminal here and there. If you're not bothered about sq the head unit will be more than man enough to drive door speakers. fr€$h&m1nt¥ definitely keep at it, a good ICE build is just as cool as any other build process on a car. Love reading proper sq driven builds as I've always wanted a better understanding of what's required.

Thanks I think sound deadening would have its advantages even if you don't install a stereo, especially on older cars where there is thin carpet straight onto the metal.

Hell yeah, 0-gauge wire. Memories of being 18/19 and stuffing 0-gauge through holes in cars.. mind 90s Fiesta have plenty. Usually by torchlight at 10pm. Keep going Yep that was pretty much me, luckily the bulkhead access hole was nice and easy once I'd found it.

georgeb and sb thanks, I won't claim to be an expert in anything but before I start jobs I research as much as possible and learnt a lot on my cube by reading posts on talkaudio (now talkstuff). By spreading at least some of the knowledge I picked up / still picking up there hopefully I'll help others too by posting my aspects on here.

Always seemed to find that if you got lucky with the bulkhead homes being good, you'd then get shafted on anywhere to tuck the wires inside the car. A mate had a brand new stilo, routed it under the car on first attempt as interior was just shocking to get all the wiring in that he needed. Had 3* 12" vibes and a monoblock amp in the boot, filled it. Driven by a laptop under passenger side seat, touchscreen display in dash and a hidden head unit acting as middleman.

... I don't think there's much interest in stereos on here which is fair enough ... Wrong! I even started a thread once (plus there are some others) on that matter and a few people followed - maybe they just didn´t read your "modern-ish nissan" thread? So keep posting, I will be happily following with interest. Sorry I didn't mean there weren't any.. I just meant in proportion to overall user base.

I'm liking it too for some motivation - really need to pull out my JDM stereo and stop the lady asking me for toll charges!

I think most users on here would be more worried about subs rattling out their rust/filler or the sub box falling through the boot floor. Stereo's for most are after they've got the car in a reliable condition. Can't beat a Nissan for that

I'm just down the A5 in Cannock so pop up there a few times a year - especially since they improved the shopping area - but also for ultimate dubs and ultimate stance each year in march and October at the international centre.

Had a bit more time than usual today because I spent some time this evening making templates as well as my lunch break measuring up and marking, which has it happens I had to remeasure and shuffle things along after I'd made the templates any way. Still that just makes the templates all the more worthwhile. So to start last night I dropped the centre seat rails back in temporarily to aid the measuring. I'm actually going to use the rails to mount the amps to buy they'll need to be cut and cross pieces fitted before they're ready to go back in permanently... Templates made. Yes I am tempted to make a train track part of the build. Fitted with double sided tape, is it me or does the sub box shape look rude? I'm sure it won't in black and when it's not 2D! View from the rear... View of each from driver's side... A fused distribution block and earth point will be accessible between the two amps. I'll cut the end of the centre rails where the sub box will sit, and I'll raise it up on MDF stilts so it doesn't vibrate through the seat rails etc. The box will be bolted into place using the captive nuts that previously held the front end of the centre seat rails in place. With the templates in place I could measure up my cabling requirements and draw up a final shopping list.

I then wanted to start cleaning the interior as it stinks of wood (the material not the smell of a boner) best quote ever!

A bit of doodling from last night ... And removed the a pillar trims on lunch ready to start planning the tweeter pod mounts ... Gone in 60 seconds Just two screws in the handle, lever a flat bladed screwdriver behind the edge of trim behind the door rubber and off it pops... Reverse side, you can see the sprung metal clips here... Standard tweeter removed, I'll drill through the centre of the circle for the new tweeter pod bracket to feed through... The holes near the bottom of the a pillars are in the centre of the area where the tweeter pod brackets will be mounted, lots of metal to play with... Passenger side (more cables here - presumably for the sunroof motors) Driver side At this point I'm very tempted to remove the upper dash top to see if I can fit the mid range speakers in the dash instead of in the doors.

No real progress but a few more bolts and bits removed... OEM DVD and Japanese only nav system removed which leaves a nice single din slot for a possible sound processor in future, or a cubby for a bit more glove box space for now. If I could find a wiring diagram I may be able to reuse cables to use another source for the oem screen. I decided to cancel my speakers in dashboard plans as there looked too much stuff to remove before I even find out if there's enough space but before I refitted the front section of dash top I took photos of the components underneath in case I need to find them in future... A GPS receiver? Label on the lower panel ... Part numbers / references of what's lurking beneath on the driver's side... The top panel is held on by 4 clips in passenger side corner, 1 clip either side of windscreen air vent, 3 clips driver's side. Just noting that for reference in case I need to remove in future. Apologies if this isn't much interest to anyone else but I'm using it as a personal log to refer back to as much as anything!

Don't the Bose equipped ones have a speaker in the dash?
(I've just bought one of these bus's so I've been doing a lot of reading)

Don't the Bose equipped ones have a speaker in the dash? (I've just bought one of these bus's so I've been doing a lot of reading) Good decision The later Bose ones do but it's a central bass unit whereas I was trying to get a pair in the extreme corners. Earlier models with the Bose kit have a sub near the tailgate.
