Fired the Healey on Saturday. What an amazing cloud of smoke in the shop as she burned off all the oils and paints that accumulate on a new build. Combines with the jets being a bit rich it was quite the smelly CO laden affair!
Some highlights:
Ran for the 20-25 minutes required to break in the cam and was hitting on all cylinders with consistent temps across all exhaust header tubes
Temps never went over 200F Oil pressure steady at 60 psi No bad noises from inside the engine. Engine is quite responsive to the throttle No blow-by from tappet chest or valve cover No oil leaks once I found and plugged two missing bolts on the side of the block where a mechanical pump would go. All gears in the rebuilt box report for duty and the clutch seems to work The rebuilt rear diff does not make bad noises/howls
Stuff "To do"
Minor exhaust leak where muffler meets tailpipe I don't think the markings on the balancer are matched to TDC on this engine so timing might be an issue. Tach does not work yet. Need to work on idle speed and quality. Never adjusted SU HD8 carbs, so learning. Plenty of HD6 experience so other than idle tuning same thing. Idle quality in the end might be a bit rougher than I want due to alloy flywheel...TBD. Floor-pan was at 70F and the Foot-panel behind the pedals was at 110F. The tubular header is HOT. Not happy with how close the header pipe is to the oil pressure line. Not easy to move.

I tuned in for the Molvo and found more impressive stuff with the Healey. You know you make novice garage spanner twirlers like me look bad. Glad you don’t live too near by. Otherwise my son would realise just how bad my car antics are the the scheme of things! Thanks for posting - you always inspire me to try to do that little bit better than I would have otherwise done!

Yeah, I know this thread kinda violates the board rule by not being what the tittle says all the time, but there is just not enough Molvo content to keep posting. There is however stuff going on in the garage that I know others like to follow. I hope the Healey goes away in a month or so, Then the Hot Rod can come back for road testing and final tuning. Hopefully this years Molvo reporting will be from road trips. The stuff to do list is getting shorter every year as I use the winter to do small boring detail stuff.

Just to prove that my main activity in the shop is not inspecting the function of the hinges on the beer fridge. Sometimes a mechanical contraption DOES leave the shop!

Was out for the first drive of the year after winter storage. Just happened to go past a "Cars and Coffee" and pulled in for a gander. Parked next to this very nice 1990 Miata just to remind myself of where the whole thing started. Good news is that the Molvo seems to be running well after its winter nap. Bad news is that frozen water started falling out of the sky an hour after I took this picture. Welcome to springtime in Canada.

Don't want to be known as the slowest build thread on the forum, so a quick update to show Healey progress. Finally got the outer panels to fit the repaired shrouds. There is appointment with the paint shop in June so the panels need to be stripped bare. That is a lot of fun let me tell you. Using aircraft paint stripper and a wire cup on the angle grinder. Sadly, they have taken the good stuff that kills you out of the paint stripper, so the job takes a lot more effort and time out of your life. Some kind of irony in there. In the good old days, it was standard practice to spread filler on bare metal and then build on top of that. Current practice is to spray epoxy on all metal and build on top of the epoxy coat. While adhesion might have been better on bare metal, the downside is that body fill produces some small amount of moisture when curing, and it will become trapped under the filler. Now, keep in mind that this filler was applied circa 1973, so is not like it has not done a good job, but you can see where there surface rust in many places. Easy to wire wheel off, but there none the less.

Polystrip discs will take the paint off without damaging the steel underneath. You could strip that wing in 10 mins with one, with the steel shiny new finish as well.

Not familiar with the polystrip disc. Will look into it. I am doing the job with aircraft paint stripper and scrapers for the most part. The actual paint comes right of after a few minutes of soak time. Who ever painted the car last completely skimmed the car with a coat of filler. Interesting and a lot of work to remove since the paint stripper does not go deep into the filler. About another 4 hours to finish the stripping and then I have to redo the patches on the bottom of the front wings since they do not line up with the door edge. Pete

This was done with a polystrip disc, took about half an hour. I did look into those after you mentioned. And I did in fact have a couple in my collection of abrasive stuff. I call them Oatmeal Cookies. Thing is, they toss one heck of a lot of dust on to everything in my shop. Worse yet, I have to work with the shop door closed so that the noise of the angle grinder does not annoy neighbors. I did give it a go and it works wonderfully. Then I took the leaf blower to the shop to clear it out and went back to the paint stripper!

My work on Patches is technically done for the time being. The panels are on to stay and the fit and gaps are workable. While I did consider redoing the wing repairs that were done circa 1973, there was no real need to spend the time and $$$ to do so. They are not rusting and the car is going to get re-skimmed with filler regardless. Lets just call these repairs "period correct" and send it. The Healey will return after a stint in "paint jail" and in the interim the Hot Rod will return for some final fettling before heading home.

While the Healey is oUt for a touch of color, the Red Rocket has come back for some finishing details. First order of business was to get the rear raised since it was pretty much in the dirt with two people aboard. Cant go any higher since it has an underslung chassis and has about 1/2" of droop left.

Lest we forget the point of this thread, rest assured that the Molvo is seeing more use and less development. It is a reality of project cars that it will take time and money long after when the car hits the road for the fist time. In this case it has been 2 years, 4 gearboxes. 3 cams and 5 distributors, 2 intake manifolds and 3 fuel mixers. Lessons learned: both aftermarket EFI and Chinese parts are bad. When combined, they are a trouble shooting horror show. This summer has seen pretty routine use to various car shows venturing further and further from home. Glad to report that the Molvo is finally becoming the cruiser that it was meant to bi from the start of the project. Long legged and fast. Hope to send the Hot Rod home in a month or so and the Healey should be back from paint in a week or so.

The Healey is scheduled to arrive on Monday. Is it Monday yet? No, but it is "Paint Jail" time. No idea what happened to the Healey between "I am dropping it off on Monday" and two weeks later no word.
