To the mods.
Do you think the forum might benefit from a 'Tools for sale/swap/loan section'. We are always looking for the odd tool to do that 'one off' job. Could be a very useful addition, if someone local has a particular tool, that could be loaned or bought, etc.
I'm sure too, there will be lots of people with stuff they bought for the same 'one off' jobs, that are now gathering dust.
I know there is Ebay, but they don't loan or swap as far as I remember and they also want 10% off you !!!!
Does anyone else agree, or is it a non starter ?

this could be a good idea, if say i had to buy a specific tool for a job, use it once then it never gets used again i could sell it back on at £1 less than i paid for it, the next guy buys it uses it once and then sells on for £1 less than he paid for it and so on and so on until the tool has been used many times and only cost us all £1. then maybe it could go as a free loan when the original cost price has been covered and we all benefit from knowing where to get that one off tool we only need once. very good idea fella

Hi, nice idea gazzab1978, But the cheaper the tool gets the more likely it will get lost to the system when someone decides to keep it as it's cheap. Or if it gets damaged and doesn't work as it should who bears the cost or blame for it, "it's not me it was like that when I got it"

1eighteen : I like your thinking - could be useful gazza : good idea but I don't see pooling the costs would work If I had a spare £5 tool I'd give it away or lend out as it's not worth keeping track of. If my £200 tool is now spare, I don't want to lend it out and get a message "it's broke - it was like that when you gave it to me" when I pass it on. ...there will be lots of people with stuff they bought for the same 'one off' jobs, that are now gathering dust. I found the Tat auction at the RR Gathering to be great way of offloading tools that I won't need again (including a used-once balljoint splitter), and the proceed go to a good cause (search KFW Tat auction for more info ) retrorides.proboards.com/thread/179664/happening-on-weekendIf you need to borrow a tool, try posting a "Help" type thread in the general board (with pics - we like pics ) and you might get someone local who can lend you what you need. cheers

one make/ model Owner clubs are usually a good way to source a specialist tool as there is always that one person who has it, some clubs ask for a refundable deposit (value of tool) which means having to cough up the money but you get it back.
What about the 'wanted/swap' section?

If my £200 tool is now spare, I don't want to lend it out and get a message "it's broke - it was like that when you gave it to me" when I pass it on. Only way it would work is if they left a deposit, if the tool is worth £200 then a £200 deposit, use the tool, return it in the recieved condition, get the £200 back. I'm carefull who i lend tools to, lent my engine crane to a neighbour, he had it a year, that was fine as i knew it was safe and was out of my way. I have a Machine Mart Hydraulic spring compressor gathering dust, bought it to do the springs on an E38, just used it the once, wouldn't fit the cars i have now. Also have the tool to do the rear lower bushes/ball joints on E38/E39, again used once, gathering dust. Wouldn't lend out something expensive and complicated like my MIG welder as there is too mch that could go wrong with it in other hands and it's too valuable/usefull to me.

Then you get the scenario that someone claims you've damaged their £200 tool and withholds the deposit, even though it was fine when you gave it back. It's a proverbial minefield and not worth entertaining.

As above, it's a pain lending things, I just buy stuff I need from eBay 2nd hand then sell it back on there. It's usually only a week later so the value stays consistant, see the 10% charge as a rental fee! Lol
