Not settled on a head unit yet though. Are they ALL yours? I thought I was bad with an old school alpine tape unit (like in your pic, top left) An Alpine flip out CD unit, with DSP processor, and Minidisc multichanger with graphic display. About 5 Sony head units from the nineties and noughties and one Ipod Alpine from more recent times. This picture doesn't include the Sony department or any of the miscellaneous ones. Or the amps. Or the speakers . Or any of the wiring harnesses, interconnects, processors..... Or multi changers. But yes. I might have a problem.

Phil, we all know you have a problem. But luckily we all have the same one as well.
I'm running the original Becker Europa mated to a parrot mk series for MP3 / phone connection, and then to some Realistic pod speakers in the kick panels and some infinity 6 x 9 on the rear shelf - hidden with some period looking cloth covers I made.
Changes are afoot however. I've got a selection of more modern blaupunkt units and pioneer and sony amps. I will be making something similar to the suitcase sub box above, and working to improve the front sound quality. The Becker is the only thing that will ever occupy the dashboard, but I may be working on making one of the other detachable faceplates remote, to hide under the dashboard when I don't want to see it.

I've got a bit of an old school Rockford Fosgate fetish, with a few bits of Soundstream, KEF, Mission and Denon in the cupboard.

I'd try for a slightly newer Clarion or a slightly older Alpine.
The Japanese made Alpines are better.
Clarion made some very nice units too. I'll try to find some examples.

This is a very fine Grundig SCD 3390. It matches the black plastic dashboard in the Caddy perfectly, it's good quality and you don't need a programmer's degree to operate it. At the moment I have a pair of speakers under the seats which were designed to sit on the parcel shelf, but in the future I will make new door cards which offer space for a two-way-system.

In my two boys Mk2 Golfs I used a period Kenwood radio cassette and had a sparky at work tap into the cd changer din plug circuit and add a jack plug for an Ipod. There is also an on off switch on the power side to the cd changer which I connected to another fog light switch in one of the blanks so that you can cut the power to the changer. The reason for this is when you plug an Ipod in you get the sound from the cd as well but turn the changer off and you have just the Ipod. The jack plug is located behind the ashtray flap so all looks retro and cool but with good sound through the amp and sub. Hope this makes sense

mines not exactly retro but has problems all of it's own...Import, smaller space than standard DIN, 4" subwoofer with no room for anything available today, cross-wired 3 speaker pods attached to dash...all of which were 20+ yrs old and the paper on the cones a little brittle!! doors not a problem luckily though, some half decent components and the tweeter put in the dash pods. the other 2 speakers in each dash pod were from RS, from memory something to do with PA systems and parallel wired to reduce the ohms, or up it, can't remember? main issue was access to said pods....this is what had to happen to get to 2 bolts on each pod..yikes... HU is a Fusion marine unit and cobbled into a home made housing with a USB port as well, still needs final finishing but can stay as is for now...we az soundz.... oh yeh, almost forgot the overkill part... keeps the OH's back warm

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I'm only just discovering the rest of the forum outside Reader's Rides! This sort of thing is right up my street. I like retro stuff, and it bugs me when something looks out of place. Modern radios just seem to be as garish as possible to stand out in Halfords! Although this isn't too bad I suppose. In my case I've had the car for nearly 20 years now, and shortly after I got it (for my 18th birthday) I bought this: This served me well for many years, and even survived a break-in as I'd mounted it very securely - although they smashed up the front trying to get it out. Last year I wired up something which spliced into the aerial cable, blocked out any other FM signals and transmitted audio from my phone via FM. This was OK but a bit on the quiet side. Then earlier this year I bought this, which I'd been after for a while: Sound quality was supposed to be better (although I couldn't notice a difference!) and it had an IP-bus input, meaning I could add an interface for a USB drive. But, I wasn't a massive fan of actually using that head unit. The buttons were mostly the same by feel, the white LEDs were a bit too bright and didn't match the dash illumination (a pet hate), you had to fold down the front to load a CD (which I still do from time to time), and lastly, I much prefer the old Pioneer logo! It also had no pause button, so to stop playback you had to scroll through the function menu and turn it on or off by turning the knob. So I sold it. With the proceeds I splashed out £2.07 on this, which is almost identical to the original, except I was able to connect up the USB interface. There's something rather satisfying about getting old technology to work with a device which didn't even exist when it was made!

Sometimes, others may not understand why you like a car so much. Sometimes, you may not even understand why you like a car so much. But none of that matters; all that matters is that you like the car, and having it makes you happy.

I was running this in my old 190e: Bought the matching CD changer for £5: Made up a box to switch between the CD changer and a line-in: Was pretty happy with that setup, not particularly high-end but looked more appropriate than a modern unit and didn't break the bank. It's definitely worth looking into using the CD changer input for a line-in, I've had good results doing this on a few different cars.

This is the audio I have built up for my Sierra. Still undecided on the headunit, but it will be between these 2. Front speakers. Subs! Currently JL audio, but looking for a pair of Longmills. Amps for subs and front comps. Abit of wiring!

I like the idea of the line in switch, how did you do it? All I did was use a DPDT (double pole, double throw) switch like this: The centre pins of the switch are the L/R channels to the stereo, then one side goes to the CD changer, the other side goes to your 3.5mm jack or cable. A word of advice though - using this setup, I found that there was a bit of signal bleed from the changer, so even when you had the switch set to line-in you could still hear a tiny bit of the CD playing. I got round this by burning a silent CD, which in turn renders the switch useless - you could wire the 3.5mm jack direct into the CD changer line with no switch, then to use the line-in all you'd have to do is play the silent CD. This is the way I'd do it if I had to do it again

Liking the wood effect Kenwood! One thing which bugged me about just playing music from the phone through a line-in, was actually controlling it. With a touch screen, you can't just operate it by feel (although I guess with an iPod you can to some extent). So it was a pain to stop and select a different album. While the USB interface viewed via a tiny display is a bit 'clunky', it's a lot better for me. With speakers I didn't want anything obvious, so underneath the original grilles in the rear... ...are a set of Eminence 289 speakers: The original shelf was layered on top of a piece of plywood to provide a solid mounting. I've got a Mckenzie 12" subwoofer hidden away too, but the cone surround has started to perish so I need to replace that at some point :-( And I'm VERY tempted by this! www.ebay.co.uk/itm/High-End-Pioneer-DEH-P645R-W-Reciever-CD-Wood-finish-Remote-Near-MINT-/371494540790

Interesting thread.
I've an inexpensive mechless JVC head unit in my Land-Rover at the moment, which I bought on the understanding it was half depth. Turned out not to be, which was a pain, as mounting a full depth radio in a Series 2 means either in an overhead console, or out of reach/sight from the driver's seat. It was fine and dandy for a bit, but I kept getting "miswiring/please reset" errors coming up, and after bit it no longer wants to reset. I don't know whether the vibration or the damp/condensation has got to it, or if I've just been unlucky. It did everything I needed though, all my music is on the phone these days, and I don't have any tapes left any more!
There seems to be more choice in mechless units these days, and a half-depth one might even fit somewhere I can see it easily on the dash (although, having made fitted and wired in an overhead mounting I'm reluctant to spend time chopping stuff about again). I can't decide between another cheap (sub £100) new HU, or to go for something like a Retrosound one.
Any thoughts/ideas would be welcome. :-)

I was plannning on installing some Planet Audio HVT-amps (with tube pre-amp stage) and a McIntosh MX406 in my MGB. Completly wated quality due to all the noise in the MGB, but it would've looked amazing

I want to get mine back to a similar after market unit that was offered in 1996, does anyone know where I can find brochures from around that time, It currently has a 2001 Sony CDX L450 but would like a little older, and not the original Blaupunkt CD43 which I know was also fitted to Rovers of a similar age. Cost wise sadly a Becker Traffic pro is a bit to rich for me, but they do look great in older cars for a modern head unit.
I don't mind the speakers being newer or improves as these are non visable, I already have 6x9's in the parcel shelf in adapters which are not visible either, but cant decide if I should keep my amplified 12" vibe sub box in the box, or go with the smaller 10" and small Kenwood amp (from the 90's)

Decent sound, not too flashy and with front & rear pre-outs.
