This is probably going to be a very silly thread so that's about par for the course. This will be my general waffling thread for everything that doesn't fit into the other threads you see in my signature. We start the usual rambling with Britney's "Oops I did it again" and we should end tonight with the Trumpton Fire Brigade. WHAAAAAAAAAAT you ask, so I must explain. The turbine community is quite small and having got the heads up on some primo bits that had been placed on Ebay, I investigated, tracked down the seller and as luck would have it I had some stuff he wanted and therefore I ended up upsetting the 51 watchers and three bidders on Ebay as he cancelled the auction early. Sorry to those peeps. What did I get? Two, count them, not one, not three but two. Two is the number thereof of Rover/Sigmund 1S60 Gas Turbine 400gpm portable fire pumps as used by the Royal Navy for onboard fires when the ship's power was down. What do they look like? The hot end The inhibited one Plaque (I'm hoping it's brass underneath) Side and front Control panel Tonight we will go into the justification, the prostration before SWMBO and the PLANS for the future. You will have to sharpen your imaginations as one will be restored as a working pump but the other will donate the turbine for that which our fantasies can come up with. I leave you 'til later with the spine tingling sound of one in action Video

How does one gain access to this small community where old turbines are available for sale? I'd love something like that!

How does one gain access to this small community where old turbines are available for sale? I'd love something like that! Get on the JATO forum and read everything on jetpower.co.uk. Check Ebay, Gumtree and Craigslist for turbines. jetenginetrader.co.uk/ and www.everettaero.com/ always have stuff for sale. My lead for the Rovers came from a friend who lives on EBay. Good luck and welcome to the addiction.

Part two (a bit later than promised) The JustificationThey're turbines! No justification necessary. Marital Court is adjourned. Prostration before SWMBOHow to break the news to my fragrant little flower who knows that I am perpetually in the state of TMFP (Too many Feekin' Projects). I tried a tentative "I've been a naughty boy". Eyebrows were raised when it was followed by "I probably should tell you" BUT she then says "I've got something to tell you as well". It seems she's just paid for a new fence for the kids and was working up to confess. So we agreed it was a score-draw and retreated to the DMZ to live happily ever after until the next time. The Inhibited Pump SetRestoration and three potential uses. The first (the sensible one) being as an emergency pump for the local flood warden who just happens to be SWMBO. When we have a combined high tide, heavy rain and a south westerly gale you can find us, inevitably at night, handing out sandbags to threatened properties. It never fails to amaze me about the selfishness of some people at these times. While the flood is bearing down on us across the causeway we're inundated with complaints that the sandbags across the road have stopped them going into town (there is the bypass but "that's awfully inconvenient, don'tcherknow"). Last time we had a bus go straight through the sandbag wall, the driver swearing he had never seen the 'Road Closed' sign which just happened to be stuck under the bus. So come the next deluge I hope to be able to fire up the Rover/Sigmund to mop up the water that gets over/under/by the new flood defences and keep all those people in the 'dry' properties awake and hopefully counting their blessings. Secondly it came to me that by slinging the 300 gallon tank back on the Goddess along with the pump and making up a simple pintle mount that I would have the only UK water cannon in private hands :8. Now 300 gallons divided by 400 gpm gives nearly 7 gallons a second and 45 seconds duration. What use that, you might say? I'm sure I could find one Thirdly that when I am further into my dotage I can get free entry to the local shows by exhibiting it and upset the local Stationary Engine boys with my nasty, noisy contraption. The Bitsa Pump SetNot sure what state this is in BUT I won't need two pumps so I may have a working 60shp turbine that is only 24 inches high and 19 inches wide. The output speed is 4,600 rpm and it burns 6 gallons an hour whatever you're doing with it. This is where your imagination comes in as ours (Dangerous and me) has so far stretched to the short list below. 1) It would be a hoot in a 2CV and Dangerous just happens to have one. 2) I live near Poole Harbour and have always hankered after an unusual means of aquatic transport. This gives two options, either use the whole pumpset as a jet drive or stick a propellor on the turbine and build an air boat a la the Florida swamps. 3) Post-apocalyptic stylee motorbike. A real wasteland machine would need a motor that would burn any distillate fuel and have lots of room for supplies and the necessary fuel so an old-skool Panther sloper combination would be an ideal stepping off point. What can you come up with? Needless to say it's all very speculative due to the TMFP (as above) syndrome because I've got to get the Goddess finished and the SpridJET under way. I've also been given an old Countax garden tractor to use as a pit tug/starter/fuel bowser for the SpridJET and that needs fettling. At the beginning I mentioned ending with the Trumpton Fire Brigade so have a look at the video below. It's all very interesting (to me) but if you want to directly check out Pugh, Pugh, Barney McGrew, Cuthbert, Dibble and Grub then 5:20 minutes in is your time. Will be picking them up in the next couple of weeks after Malta so more info then.

I've spent a lot of time thinking about hybrid electric-turbine powered cars and although I'd love to fit one to a car I've come to the conclusion that it really is a very inefficient system. Having a turbine, generator, battery pack and motor weighing down a car probably won't make for great performance, never mind trying to fit it all in (I think an XJS would be the perfect size though).
If only we could capture the heat and plug it into your house after your drive home from work I thought... Then I thought again. Take the turbine and genny out of the car and leave them at home. After your day's driving around on batteries, return home to recharge from your grid-supplied gas turbine generator with the waste heat warming your house up. You could also register as a micro-CHP (combined heat and power) system and benefit from feed in tariffs of 13p/kWh, not bad when gas is <3p/kWh and you'd be burning it anyway to heat your home. Even if your turbine is only 20% efficient and your heat recovery 50% efficient, you're still up on the deal.*
I'm currently at the sharp end of commissioning two second hand 80MW gas turbines in Turkey so I'll have to see how sick I am of the idea when I finally get home from this job!
*please check my maths.

That's the maddest thing I've seen in ages.
Love the starting handle, and lighting your ciggie off the exhaust would be enough to make me take up smoking. But I think the best bit is that while you are dousing the flames at one end of the pump its other end is trying to set fire to another bit of your boat.
It's fantastic. Well done that man. Keep it up!

I have no opinion one way or the other as to the use you put them to. However, I do know it'll be brilliant, whatever is chosen.

Think George has hit the nail on the head there. All options sound excellent. I do like the idea of using the restored one in anger though (and also on the stationary engine line at a steam rally... you do like upsetting folk don't you! )

Converting the goddess to a water cannon, might mean you could rent it out to Boris Johnson. The idea of a boat conversion was done on the tv program "engine addict" last week, mind you he did have a bigger engine, but jet powered boats are a scarce beast with a reputation for killing people Ttfn Glenn

It's a Rover Gas Turbine powered aircraft Jim, but not a we know it. Owner : Ira Everage, Houston TX. Name : Everage Texas Turbo Texas Turbo 1995 = 2pClwM rg; 60hp R-R Rover 1S90 turboprop; no specs found. Designed and built by Burt Wilcutt et al. All-metal construction, tandem seats, tapered wing with the Midget Mustang airfoil, tail from a Comanche 250, Mooney-type tri-gear. Fuel was kerosene or #1 diesel. POP: 1 [N64TT] c/n 1. Planned production never came about and the plane, while reportedly flying in tests with good stability and performance, never accumulated its 40-hour requirements for certification and was listed for sale as-is in 2007.

I don't think I am wrong when I say these are also fitted to the mighty Vulcan bomber as some form of starter for the fuel system or summat

I don't think I am wrong when I say these are also fitted to the mighty Vulcan bomber as some form of starter for the fuel system or summat Not these single shaft turbines as they are not powerful enough. You're thinking of the twin shaft turbines like the one that's going into the SpridJET, which is out of a Nimrod and the same as the Vulcan ones. They were used as air starters for the main engines.
