No idea what an 89 lude is ? lucida ? does it have a cat or egr, new oil and plugs will help, if it has a cat it needs to be up to temp before going on the sniffer, you also need to burn all that redex off as that will make it fail the test till it's gone through and done it's job (the mix is now way to high), it will still clean what it cleans but wont burn clean. Current retro - 1989 Prelude (from sig) my guess. Can i get a DOH! ![(:))](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/ninja.png) Forte do good cleaners, i've had some good results using them but 10% is a bit high to just be dirty injectors, if EFi i'd look at a new temp sensor for the ECU if seperate from the gauge sensor ?

Yes, fresh oil would make that much of a difference. It would be that much less dirty blowby (not that blowby is ever clean!) coming out of the car.
It says the car failed on smoke, what is it smoking exactly? It seems that the car is running too rich and not burning the fuel. Is it an EFI car? What state are the ignition leads and system in and can you adjust the dizzy? If you have access to a timing light I would check the timing if the latter is adjustable.
If my old Porsche 944 Turbo lacking a cat and quote the tester 'With how that smells I am surprised it passed the emissions!) and my RST on a 'bodged' KE Jetronic in some peoples eyes (it does run on the rich side) I would be surprised if yours cannot pass the emissions.

Ignore the smoke fail on the 2nd test - it doesnt smoke so must be a mistake.
I have also turned in the fuel screws on the carbs tonight as its not burning all the fuel off.
It does spit fluid out of the exhaust - I think water though and not unburnt petrol?

Dodgerover's advice re. Forte fuel system cleaner is worth listening to. Plus a thorough service and fresh fuel of course.

Which Forte fuel system cleaner should I use - there seems to be several different ones?
Use it in the petrol before the emissions test or during?

Buy some hotter running plugs and give it a good run just before the test, if your having real problems retard the ignition a touch, also running 10% methanol in your fuel will help, if that don't do it, nothing short of a full rebuild will do it.

Forget your snake skin additives throw 10% toluene/asatone and retard the ignition but not for long. Clean oil, check your plug gaps, get it hot. Basically get it running as lean as you can the toluene will increase the octane level a burn more efficiently. If not as said its a rebuild Chris

You mention carbs and fuel screws... I'd change the oil and filter, find out what %co the engine SHOULD be producing (that'll be in your Haynes/online) then talk nicely to your mot guy... Assuming the ignition timing is correct, (if not, sort that first!) Drive there, pop the car on the meter, set the co to the manufacturer's figure on the mixture screw. ... That should be well within mot requirements. Drive home/about a bit, then check the colour of your plugs. Ask your mot guy if you can pop back in a week or 2 and re-check.

If not as said its a rebuild Chris Many of the additives will increase the octane level and have the same effect. We did a test many years ago with Redex, and Nitrox Hot Shot and both lowered the emissions by a surprising amount - albeit, I suspect, only for the duration of the tank. A mate had a D-plate 2.0 Sapphire which failed the emissions test quite horrifically - he had it Terracleaned* - and it easily passed. I strongly suspect that in a couple of hundred miles later, it would have failed again, but as a desperation measure it's worth consideration. I am incredibly sceptical about all additives, they're all snake oil - in that they don't clean the engine as claimed, nor increase mpg/performance for anything other than a brief period of time when they're in the tank. If it was my car I'd give it a full-on service, change whatever sensors I could lay my hands on, chuck a couple of bottles of Redex into a tank of fresh petrol and hope for the best... *I also had it done on a diesel Mondeo (it was free for a magazine feature) and it made no difference whatsoever

I got it through in the end..
I dumped a bottle of redex into a near empty tank and ran it out.
Then I dumped a couple gallons of fresh high octane fuel.
Adjusted the fuel mixture as it was running too rich.
Used some carb cleaner and removed the air filter for the MOT run.
Let it idle for half hour before going to the station.
Used 1st and 2nd gears only to the station keeping revs up at 4/5000 revs.
Called them before and asked to get straight on the emissions test whilst it was hot.
Left a large packet of digestives.
Past with flying colors.

About 4 months back a i had a new shape beetle in with a missfire and slightly low comp on cyl 3, used some snake oil down that plug hole and it cleared the misfire up for a while but it came back after a month so with a misefire on cyl 1 so i rebuilt it, cyl 3 was spotless but had a scored bore wall from stuck rings but they were free now (it was the only cyl that had free rings) a re ring and a rehone sorted it but the cleaner worked, it was just used too late to save that bore and then cyl 1 went the same way, it's an issue they suffer with si i knew it was going to need a rebuild but the owner needed more time to sort a replacement while i fixed the issue. Also cars i use the products on to get through an MOT generaly pass aagin the next year, without needing another dose so as i get to see the effects over years not days i can say IME some work if used for the right reason. I recently used forte EGR cleaner on a citroen HDi engine as the EGR was stuck open, to get the van through the MOT, 6 months later i had to strip it for a cam chain tensioner to be replaced, the EGR was the only thing that was even close to clean on the thing it got the EGR working and cleaned the runners near it but couldn't shift this lot at the other end of the manifold (or more like didnt reach that end). here you can see where the EGR cleaner has shifted the blockadge at the EGR/air inlet end of the manifold but not the other runners (and yes the zorst smooked like a lil bstd !! ) this is what it didn't shift! but it did clean the EGR, it did free it off and it got it through the MOT

I know it wouldn't help the day before the test but... I know of an MGTF which has been right on the pass limit for emissions for a few years. After the last MOT the owner has been using Redex religiously in every fill up. This year, it passed with flying colours!!
I wouldn't have ever believed it would work.

That can go for anything ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) . My sister's Mondeo 2.5T is on 145k. It sees V-Power fuel when she drives it but that is about it ; it may now just run on supermarket stuff. It has however been serviced every MOT. At every MOT my tester and I wonder if the tester has broken - it reads not far off 0% for the CO and the HCs are in the two figures not three.
