mot's over 3.5t afaik are all done at vosa centres, regarding any specific regulations the only ones that spring to mind are the mudguards and spray suppression, and the different tyre tread regs, actual details i don't recall as its quite a while since i worked on trucks and trailers.

All the equipment would need to be fixed, and form part of the vehicle though, you can't have a detachable "pod" because that then forms a load. To be honest though, it'd be worth your while taking whatever tests were appropriate to the vehicle you want to end up with, as you'll definitely learn something in the process that will likely make you a safer and better driver, whatever you're behind the wheel of. |

thats all sounds pretty much as ive been reading glen. so, next question, seeing as ive never had to MOT anything over 3.5T, is there anything i might need to know about that i wont have encountered at normal car/van MOTs? As Mr welshpug says, tests are carried out at VOSA centres. A lot of them are now done by traveling examiners at the workshops of hauliers with big fleets, so there may be somewhere quite close to you. The test itself isn't too horrific, especially if your truck is still going to be classed as a 1947 built vehicle. Brakes, lights, steering, leaks, wipers, sharp bits sticking out, structural integrity etc. are all as you'd imagine. The spray suppression, underrun protection equipment, tachograph and suchlike shouldn't come into it as your wagon will be exempt from the legislation that requires its fitment. To be honest, I'd expect my Austin to fail its first test on something stupid I've missed then be ok forever after with basic attention to maintenance. I forgot. There is one category of registration that is MoT exempt, but still allows the carrying of loads, and that's "Showmans". Trouble is, you need to actually be a showman to qualify, so for most people it's a non-starter. That and the fact you are still obliged to maintain the vehicle in a fully roadworthy condition, and you need to pay road tax... |

Doesn't have to be a 'goods vehicle test centre' ( ie Vosa) thats tests them. There are quite a few Hgv test centres around,most truck main dealers offer them ( well they do round here anyway) Also they refuse to test a vehicle thats not been cleaned underneath. As a general rule for the commercial vehicle MOT, the vehicle is offered for test expecting a pass,not like most cars, 'lets see what it fails on' Ours are off the rd for 3days before the test to make them fit for test. This probably won'y apply in Dez's case being a privately owned 'non commercial' vehicle. |
