Some of you may recall seeing my old project, my 1982 Datsun Sunny. Unfortunately she's now been sold in order to fund an incredible project which I couldn't say no too. My good old pal tedmunds finally after a year of nagging decided to sell his GX71 (was not an easy decision for him I tell you that now). Now if any of you are J heads or seen those crazy japs revving their nuts off in the media you may recognise this car and the cult following for them in Japan.
These were only produced in Japan so to see one this side of the pond is incredibly lucky, not only that but this is the limited version meaning its the holy grail of the gx world. Digital Dash, VIP executive styling and 80s velour...what more could you want?
Now this car has a rather cool back story, the original owner of the car used to work in Japan and bought this car brand new as his company car. He loved the car so much that he got it shipped back with him in the 90s and it stayed in his family until he unfortunately passed away. It was then acquired by Tom when the son of the original owner decided to see it (believe he's on this site actually can't remember his username) and now my constant nagging and begging has paid off and it's now owned by me.
I just wanted to introduce the car before any real updates come along but I am making sure this car is done right and given the attention to detail it deserves. Here's some pictures to wet your appetite but updates will slowly come rolling out and the real progress will start in a few months.
Yep,slam it,some dished wheels and you're almost there
Thats the same poo-brown colour interior they used on the pre facelift 85-87 ST162 Celica, usually came with two tone bronze paint. So horrible its super cool in my book.Toyota also utilised a Starship enterprise type digital dash in the JDM/USDM versions, never available over here as far as I'm aware.
Thanks for the comments guys Got a few bodywork things to look at before I get carried away. I've already got some coilovers for it so the car will be getting put on the floor, just need to get the bodywork looking mint before that.
First bit of progress with the gx today, spent the morning cleaning and putting some temporary wheels on to be able to move the car about. Car looks fresh out of a Dr Dre music video with the height its currently sat at so may have to put the coilovers on next weekend to see how it looks on the floor.
Got quite a lot of little jobs to do first and found some annoying cosmetic jobs that need doing but my plans just to keep chipping away and getting it all done. Just need to get the boring stuff out the way first then can move onto the fun parts.
I'm loving this, as said above the hardest thing is going to be leaving it as standard as possible.
Wheels, lows, enjoy. Buy something else to play with
first phase is going to be simple style anyway, wouldn't be able to chop the car up etc because it would hurt me too much haha. Just mainly engine mods to make enough noises and then lows and wheels done right. But as with everything money is an issue so it will all have to wait.
