Thanks guys. I haven't actually spoken to the insurers properly yet as I'm not 17 till July. I think if I was to do that first then I could look at adding power/dropping weight. As with all young drivers, the insurance is the issue with anything I can do so any help with a way to go about it Is greatly appreciated Maybe best to get some driving experience first before you think about upping the power too much

Bang for buck you're better off dropping the engine out and throwing a different engine in her... what about sourcing a 1.3? Engine swap to gain 10 bhp? Really? Hardly worth the effort. The 1 litre isn't as bad as people make out. It has the same bore as the 1.3, just a shorter crank and a head with small ports ad valves. I pressume vw did this on purpose to give more difference between the 1 litre and the equally low power 1.3. There are 3 maybe 4 engines that are ever worth the hassle of doing an engine swap. The 75bhp gt engine, the 115bhp g40 engine, the 75bhp 1.6 8v or the 100/125bhp 1.4/1.6 16v engines. Anything else IS a waste of time. Years ago we had a 1.1 Golf iirc, at the time we managed to source a 1.8 running twin carbs for £150. For that £150 I wouldn't have been able to match that engine power output of the 1.8 using the 1.1. I never realised the difference between the 1.0 and the 1.3 was only 10BHP - I learn something new each day. Are any bigger conversions easily done using the Polo?

In a word no. The polo will only take small block engines. The golf gti engine from the mk2 would need a custom front subframe. The most powerful 1.3 was the gt at 75bhp. All the other 1.3 engines in the uk were around 55 bhp
