Aye, the easy targets and the more "desirable" collectables. Stuff that is easy to flip on, often stolen to order. Again though a noisy alarm, crook lock and immobilising it in some way is all you can do really. You can only really combat the opportunists, not the gangs who are tooled up, clued up and have a plan. You can do naff all about that sadly.

If someone wants your car, it's not going to have been from seeing the number plate on the web. That being said I was most displeased when someone saw my car parked up once, did a text check on the number plate then posted up all the details online on the owners club trying to make out i was lying a out it being a GSi (i wasn't, it's a rep) but they posted everything, mot history the works. That curse word me off but again that was from someone walking past in the street, not seeing it online. I don't edit my plate out when i post pics, enough people see it day to day so someone online would have to be pretty desperate, but i don't post pics of other cars unless i have permission, they aren't mine to post.

And that falls into the everyday slot of motors being taken for profit. One mustn't forget that cars are taken for all sorts of reasons, not just for shipping or ringing. Got a knackered car with decent wings and chrome bits? There's someone out there who will want it, even more they'll want it as cheap as possible. Dave the smack head will be pumped when he finds he can get a weeks worth of blood booster for dragging your car out of the weeds for someone else.

I am an incy bit disturbed of the pic taken outside my house, I said before that I suspected I was being followed at least twice. You do question your own sanity. I think the pic was only to be used by an avid collector of 635's/ D registered cars, a bit like a train spotter of some sort. But on both occasions I gave the suspected followers the slip and got them lost so either he had hunted the streets for it and got lucky or I had missed a 'following'. I don't care a great deal but it is a bit Creepy McCreepsville.

I'm pleased that people are making owners aware that anything can and will be on the hit list one day. Making it as much of a pain in the ar$e as possible for them is the only way to go if you remotely care about your ride. Inconvenient? So is loosing your wagon.

As for that ebay logbook caper, Jesus! That's the icing on the cake for those dudes. I for the life of me don't know how it is allowed to carry on when we're out there worrying about shoving politically correct registration plates through the MOT so we can be constantly threatened by some sort of fine whilst using the roads! But, that's another thread contribution altogether.

Another tip.
If you have sat nav don't put your address under 'home' .. have heard to many tales of sat navs being nicked out of cars wagons etc,the thief then navigates to 'home' and finds out where you live ....

Fair point but this method will make it harder to track it down to a local area where it was Mot'd as most people mot their car near to where they live.

Give it a try in the below link, here you will find the mot test centre number that you can track down someone on here had a man do just this and soon after found where the owner lived and knocked on hes door to see if the car was for sale!

There are also other method of finding the address by the number plate have a read on my next post

Taken from another forum and i've seen this a lot

In the past I haven't been too fussed about blanking number plates out. A combination of laziness and a "it won't happen to me" attitude.

Recently I sold my Leon Cupra R. It was advertised on Pistonheads, eBay and Autotrader for upto one month on each. I used the same images on each site, one such image contained happened to have my mums Focus and my girlfriends Clio in the background with the registration plates visible.

Fast forward 2 weeks since selling my Leon and my mum receives a letter through the post from the DVLA notifying her that someone else is in the process of claiming ownership of her car. If they do not hear from her within 14 days the ownership will be transferred. A bit of a shock!

I advised her to contact the DVLA and also the police. She hasn't been able to contact the DVLA yet due to the easter holidays. The Police gave her a crime number, suggested this kind of scam was becoming increasingly common and also suggested she kept proof of ownership in the car with her. As she has called the police about the car it will be flagged on the Police ANPR.

So while I cannot be 100% this was the cause, it seems too much of a coincidence not to be related. Luckily we have acted early (god knows what would have happened if we were on holiday!) but we don't yet know the full extent of this. Perhaps the car will be cloned and we will receive parking tickets etc?

Please make sure you block out your number plates. If scammers are obtaining details in this way, save yourself the hassle by taking the time to obscure the plate!

Hi, That is not the test station number, that is the test number generated by DVSA when the station logs on for the test. My last four tests were done at the same place and they all have different test numbers.

Another tip: Buying your car when it comes with one key/ alarm fob only. Exercise some caution for a while because there may well be a second key/fob out there... you just wasn't given it and they already have your address on the logbook when they sold the car.
I speak from 2nd hand experience... Bye Sierra Cosworth. They've got more front than Tesco's, but it goes on...

Fair enough Colin but i still think its alot safer hiding the plates on internet websites as this is a good hunting ground for the scum bags who want the RR and as mentioned above applying for a logbook for someone else's car.

I'm not pushing for this to cause problems for people it's just to help people out    


All it takes is load the photos onto a pc/phone and edit the plates in MS Paint or a free photo editing apps

I've got a hidden cut off switch inside the cabin so it cannot be driven off by some scrote. Krookloks are not that hard to remove. After losing the keys to one, I found out.

anybody going to a car show /event can easily take a snap of car plates ( you can't drive without plates after all!) so trace you probably. ideally we need a tracker fitted to valuable or easily stolen /high theft rate cars.
add in the invisible marking ? etc and we may..start to reduce thefts. sadly high end cars will go anyway .often straight into a container and away on next high tide. lower end stuff often broken for spares. here what we really need is traceability. of say it was law that everybody selling spares for cars had to register with a government site ( so your details can be verified etc) say one off small charge? . then be given a selling license. records to be kept of ALL sales . ego anybody selling at say a boot fair? has to show a license and random checks by officials to occur. yes has a cost but ought to start reducing number of folks flogging stuff in say Ebay without any traces.
any license holder tot have to agree to keep source of spares /items recorded or face huge fine/loss of liberty .
without a bit more draconian action and organised market selling . thefts will carry on. far to easy to pop along to any car boot sale etc or on web and simply but something we want/need but don't tell anybody we have bought it! assume we all had to input to a site ..saying what bought.when .how much and from who..( would need to have name and address from sellers. -and if they are at boot fair..check there number plate too!)
yes convoluted and always a price to make work. but with classic cars and sought after parts being sold all over place..far too easy at moment to shut dodgy stuff!

Has anyone ever thought that google maps/ street view has a lot to answer for in vehicle thefts or thefts in general? I mean, I just spent literally 5 minutes scouting a random area that I don't know and saw:

a Mk1 Fiesta
Some kind of age old mini
A Mk1 corsa gsi in someones garage!
A Brooklands 280
A Mk2 golf GTi
Two blokes waving at the camera car.

I don't think google obscuring number plates is enough. It is an awful invasion of privacy and security. I know the pictures may be somewhat out of date but the chances are...

I actually think that google street view does more harm than good in these respects.
