That's basically what he's done. I suppose it's too much to expect a positive reply from the parking company; i.e that they accept that my dad isn't responsible for the charges, so we'll presume it's a case of no reply is good news. The original "offence" which alerted us to the whole cloning problem was actually fairly close to home which makes it harder to prove the legit car was nowhere near the area when it happened.
Once again, thanks to everyone who's given their advice.

Had the plate physically pinched from my car, about 20 years back. Thought it was one of my student friends having a laugh so left it. A week later, my dad calls up (at 7 am... ) and could I explain why I'd left a garage without paying for petrol as the police were interested...... Fortunately the non payer was a white Escort, while I owned a gold Cavalier. Trip to the local plod sorted it and head nothing more.

i once had a call from essex constabulary asking me if my car had been stolen, some officers were currently chasing a grey GTE 16v round essex with my number plate on it. i leaned back on my chair and replied "no its parked out in the road, i'm looking at it now"

We had a visit from Mr plod when my father's cars plate was cloned and used to knock off several petrol stations in Leicester. The offending car was a saloon and ours an estate which stopped all fuss.

I have the opposite problem this week on my modern, put the reg plte on retention and went to put my 'vanity' plate on the car which is on a cert of entitlement due to a DVLA cockup I was left with an unregistered car so they issued a 'temporary age related plate' until they sorted out the issue with my reg. So I'm now driving a car that isn't on the database as and I cant put it on the insurance database as it shows as not existing. Its not even recognised on police ANPR.

I had mine cloned, boggo standard Escort Mk6. First I knew of it was a letter from the police advising that my vehicle had been seized and I needed to contact this number to arrange its release, pay the fine, provide these documents etc etc
I went down to the Police station, thinking maybe they'd made a mistake (obviously I still had the car in my possession so it wasn't mine) she called the impound yard and there was no mistake, they had an Escort there, same colour, same reg plate! Anyway, since the car they'd seized had its VIN number ground off and mine didn't they took it that I owned the legit version and I never heard anything else about it
Luckily it seems no other crimes (at least none that ever came back on me) were committed in it, infact, if I hadn't already copped to it a couple of days earlier, I had a parking ticket of my own which I could have probably wiggled out of!

This happened with my friend many years ago. His mother was Caught time after time by the same camera in north wales, week after week. We lived over in London, and after some long discussions with the police and dvla an new age appropriate numberplate was assigned to the vehicle.
I can only assume the cloned vehicle is then left uninsured, untaxed and with no mot so will flag on the system sharpish.

Just gone through this with my mum's car, she's late 70's, not been out of the country for years, passport expired etc etc. Six months or so ago she got a letter all in French from the Paris police for a large fine for parking. Obviously it's not her, the cars on the driveway and always has been. She doesn't read French, DVLA check the system and say it's not cloned (how the hell they can tell I don't know) and the local police aren't interested. Got a local French lad to read it and it turns out it's genuine and that his mother is a civilian police worker in Paris. Another letter arrived, she's panicking that she's in trouble, police and DVLA still not interested, finally another letter arrived saying that they're gonna crush the car of she doesn't pay, ignored it and haven't heard anything else for a while now so hopefully sorted. Bar stewards for putting her through it and the police and DVLA were worse than useless.

Shame the DVLA weren't as useless when it came to handing over her details to the French dibble!
My mate had a fine come through from the state of Florida after going through a toll gate without paying. We'd just got off the plane in Orlando and picked our hire cars up, I had opted for the 'sun pass' while he'd elected to just pay the tolls as he went. Unmanned toll booth on the way back to the villa! None of us had any US coins and you can't pay in notes!...Just had to drive through in the end. Asked about it at the resort when we got there and they seemed to think we'd be OK and it was a '3 strikes' thing. Fine dropped through his door about 3 months later. Made my sun pass seem good value at least.

This is a typical US thing. I have had the exact same problem coming out of Washington Airport. Not manned and no notes allowed.
Thankfully i never got a fine and this happened on more than one occasion

I was walking along the street in Hamilton about 7 years ago and saw two identical new BMW 3 series parked next to each other with the same reg plate. I don't know if I got a picture or not but I was kind of taken aback

A few years ago I swapped my Kawasaki ZRX1100 for a Honda Pan European. It was done via dealer and I had a full receipt. About 2 weeks later I was getting several fines a day - all speeding fines and all along the same stretch of road.
I just photocopied the receipt and sent it back with each and every ticket. After a month or two of this, I phoned the dealer and suggested that they have a word with the curse word who took the bike of them. No further tickets appeared.

Seem to recall you should add your own fine notice to the parking operators - something along the line of 'having informed you of the situation if I hear from you again following this reply I shall charge you £25 per letter to reply as compensation for my time and trouble to deal with this issue"... Never know it might help. Good luck, I know it would completely stress my old man out. James
