Just read through the pages.. Great work so fare. Quick question. When you say you picked in up from Helston, would it have been from a dealer in a little village just outside helston by any chance? Thanks. It was a little village called Gweek. In fact that is what we named it. The guy dealt in tractors. He said it had been dry stored but with the amount of "green " on it I feel it had sat in his drive for a good while. As I thought an old friend of mine. Been dealing in old classic for probably 30+years. Worked for him some years ago. And some of the interesting types I got to drive, the list is endless! Did you get to look in the shed at the types that he has in his collection..?

Small world. I didn't go in the shed but did see a lot of the tractors. He also had a lovely old Citroen truck in the driveway that I have no need for but quite fancied.

I've spent another few hours working on the van. Got everything checked off the list for the MOT that I thought it needed. Wipers fitted. I used a switch off an MGB as the correct one was missing and is currently out of stock. Rear bumpers have been fitted and the inside has been cleared of junk after a year of accumulation. I've fitted a new battery but had to slice 10mm off the inside of the clamp for it to fit. 1 new earth lead and one new positive terminal grown into the mix too. I wasted half an hour trying to fix a problem with the lights. It wouldn't go to full beam it then I realised I wasn't pushing the stalk far enough forward. I refitted the steering column shroud and even gave the dash a clean - only with garage hand wipes but it's made a huge improvement over the build a dust that was there. I then decided to take it for a spin up the road. The gearbox on this is from a Renault 8 turned upside down so first and second are back to front and third and fourth are also back to front. It drove quite well considering it's been off the road for donkeys years- 80's I think. It is quite slow. I reached the dizzy heights of 55kph at one point. The brakes are all new so drove with my foot on the brakes robbed them in but needs some more. I will take it for another drive then adjust them as it pulls slightly to the left when braking. One problem I did notice is the trans is whining. It sounds like the diff as joy can get it to disappear when feathering the throttle. I don't know what to do about this yet. Oh I also re fixed the driver seat after my last bodge didn't last 2 mins. I used a thicker bit of plywood in the base and retakes with electrical tape. It'll do until it is reupholstered properly. I'm sitting a lot higher now. So bar adjusting the brakes I think it's ready for the MOT. Pictures for your enjoyment.

Awesome Estafette, I feel I need one as a support van for green car! Do you know what the old Citroen truck was? I pass through Gweek often.

How orange are your rear lights? Some testers are picky about that. Good luck for the test!

He said it had a rebuilt engine ready to go back in. It was big though. Flat bed with timber sides if I remember right.

I’ve always fancied a U23. To my eyes they, along with the American 1935 Ford trucks, have almost perfect proportions.

The van is going for MOT on Friday so this evening it was taken for a drive to bed the brakes in then readjust them. My brother has trade plates and garage insurance so he drove and I followed in my trusty Avensis with a tow rope just in case. Whilst readjusting we realised the rear brakes weren't working at all. The lever from the rear suspension arm was not contacting the load compensator. It appears there should be a rod on the end of that bolt that should pres the compensator. It has now gone so that is a quick fix any way. Also half way round one of the front indicators stopped working so will check that tomorrow. Hopefully just a bulb as the orange one I put in was a used one. The alternator also sounds like a bearing is failing so I'm going to trailer it to the MOT station in case it decides to fail on me. Have a coupe of pictures of it in the dark before the trade plates went on.

Handy thing that - a brother with a set of trade plates and a motor trade policy - I don't use my trade plates often in fact only a couple of times last year but they are such a useful resource - here's hoping for the MOT

My other brother has the both of them too and he also owns the MOT station I'm taking it too. But that doesn't mean I get preferential treatment. He still fails my cars😩.

Love the van, love the fabrication work (and the consistent desire to keep as much of the van original as possible too). Please keep up the great work!
Separately; I've noticed that there are quite alot of us (well, ok, at least 3!) living in and around West Wales. I'm in Ludchurch (between Amroth and Narberth). I actually work in London but that's by the by.
I'm thinking 'get together' as in maybe meet for a coffee/breakfast whatever and have a gander at each others cars. Or maybe not depending on people's point of view.
I'd be happy to host it (have plenty of parking and I'm able to put the kettle on and open biscuits! - I know, wonders will never cease!). Sorry for hijacking the thread by the way, I'll move it to it's own thread if you want (or the mods want).
