B3 Audi Coupe 2.8 V6 ![](http://i1121.photobucket.com/albums/l501/supercoupe1/B3coupe_zpsjosuc31w.jpg) Fairly quick and nice to drive. Can be found for well under £3k. I would +1 that. When I was younger my 18 year old mate got a 2.6 V6 one as his second car. It wasn't mega mega quick but it did alright, it sounded lovely and was really well screwed together. In your position I would be looking for one of them. I would also +1 that We bought one for £500 off here and took it to the ring and amsterdam and it was epic A celica GT4 could be had for 3k though

If you're not quite so ambitious with the engine options there are some decent & well preserved examples about, this one doesn't look bad:- Audi Coupé 2 litre![http://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/P-8AAOSwIgNXsJr9/s-l1600.jpg](http://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/P-8AAOSwIgNXsJr9/s-l1600.jpg)

I spotted this but didn't put it on as I'm assuming west4x4 doesn't want to have to finish a rebuild before using his new car. You should get a driving usable Scimitar for £3K if you keep your eye on what's coming up for sale but for that sort of money it might not be pretty. It will be if you are patient and don't buy the first thing you see. Ive owned five, one 5A and four 6As As a sports tourer, the car that created and defined the sports tourer, there is nothing better for the money, nothing easier to maintain or any cheaper to look after. They are fast, even in todays traffic, handle well and, with the overdrive, surprisingly frugal at a steady constant speed. People bang on about the fibreglass body but its no worse and considerably better than most metal bodied cars of the same generation and the chassis isn't as prone to rot as some people think, any rot that is found isn't too difficult to repair in situ if you have a common sense approach. Cooling and electrics are NOT an issue for a sorted and looked after car. Ive moved away from owning them time and time again but I keep going back to them because they are bloody good cars, an estate, sports car and fast A to B mile muncher all rolled into one........ and a blast to drive. A no brainer for me but I'm biased.....

Great suggestions folks. That Volvo is fantastic. Some of these are getting all a little bit new. I know the older stuff seemingly has rocketed in price making it hard on my budget but I'd prefere 60's 70's early 80's to the late 80s 90's stuff. There's this on eBay currently. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/331954450034 Not a fan of the rust look paint but the wheels and slimline bumper make it look amazing

I love Scimitar's but the value has steadily increased over the past few years and to buy a half decent one, i.e. one that's pretty as well as sound & driving right, I think you'd be near double west4x4's maximum budget.

I'm not against scimitars but I'm not totally in love with them.
I'm thinking my best option is a lottery win!

That will open up your options a fair bit.

Not quite the age you are looking for, but well under budget. Loved mine just the <30mpg on a daily hurt. But if you are considering an XJS not an issue. One on autotrader for £1000, gives plenty of scope to make it look like this. Mazda MX6 ![](http://i876.photobucket.com/albums/ab322/brentirudacille/Mazda%20MX6%20with%20KLZE%20Swap/Sexy.jpg)

I know the older stuff seemingly has rocketed in price making it hard on my budget but I'd prefere 60's 70's early 80's to the late 80s 90's stuff. There's this on eBay currently. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/331954450034 Not a fan of the rust look paint but the wheels and slimline bumper make it look amazing I'm not a huge fan of the XJ-S but seeing that makes me want to cry. OK, just to recap on your stated requirements / preferences:- Coupé, (possibly convertible?) 2+2. Manual. Sporty. Not cramped. Not too salty but not too sweet. Comfortable. Fast enough. Larger engine. Not too soft but not too hard. Nothing later than mid-eighties. No more than £3K. I suspect, (like all of us), you want a mint manual Jensen Interceptor for ropy Marina Coupé money. It is a bit of a tall order, I think the 'must be manual' bit in particular will rule out a lot of very good cars. It's not an impossible proposition however. You like an XJ-S, there are a few manuals floating around. A sound, driving, manual XJ-S on £3K is a stretch but cars do come up from time to time which look sound OK. These are 2 allegedly manual examples from the past 12 months that are within, or close to, your budget:- XJ-S 1 XJ-S 2![http://assets.bauer-wolke.co.uk/imagegen/p/800/-/s3/digital-cougar-assets-uk/MomoAds/2015/12/22/Misc/IMG_2341.JPG](http://assets.bauer-wolke.co.uk/imagegen/p/800/-/s3/digital-cougar-assets-uk/MomoAds/2015/12/22/Misc/IMG_2341.JPG) I don't think the price of the XJ-S has sky-rocketed during 2016 so it is to be assumed that if you keep a very close eye on what's coming up for sale you could be lucky. Possibly worth following a few auctions on ebay as well. Another car you might consider is the Triumph Stag. Luggage space is a bit restricted. With the hard top on they make a handsome Coupé but you have the flexibility of having a convertible in fine weather. Known for rot and expensive engine problems. ![](http://www.classicargarage.com/assets/images/f/triumph-stag-001-1542008f.jpg) £3K for a Stag? You will see the very occasional running, MOT'd car for this sort of money but it will be ropy & I don't think I'd fancy doing the grand European Tour in a £3K Stag. If you can do any work yourself then you'd certainly pick up a car which needs some restoration for £3K. I've owned a couple of Stags, on the best of days when you're tearing through country lanes drowned in the burble of the 3 litre, switching in and out of overdrive, with the sun in your face and the wind in your hair you couldn't wish for more. BUT they are money sponges, you'll never stop throwing money or time at them. I've owned a lot of old Jags & Daimlers but haven't owned an XJ-S but suspect you'll have exactly the same issues in terms of ongoing maintenance; it will be a bottomless pit into which you pour all your 'spare' money. The further you can stretch the budget, obviously the more chance you have of getting a better car but luck & application can play a part too. Check the relevant websites daily & be prepared to move quickly & travel for the right car. The more flexible you are on your specified requirements, the more likely you'll pick up something special within budget.

406 coupe pininfarina loveliness. I love my diesel daily. If you can stretch your budget 604 coupes are gorgeous and far more retro.
