As far as I was concerned, we live in a perfectly adequate house but my good lady wife had other ideas. To cut a long story short, we are moving to a new place. It will be a project and needs a bit of work. ...and the garden is a decent size... Which can mean only one thing to us petrolheads, a ride on mower! Now, since the house purchase, we are quite skint so a nice shiny new one is out of the question. And old things are cooler, right? This one came up cheap locally on eBay as a non runner. I took a punt and roped in my Dad to help collect it. Early inspection showed no battery but it did have a spark when the cord was pulled. I tried squirting a bit of carb cleaner down the inlet and it gave an encouraging cough. I cleaned out the carburetor and jets, re-assembled and it fired straight up!

Wow your dad's a tractor driving cat, cooool. Actually that looks a fine machine, but maybe hitting it with some lows might ruin your lawn. Tiny dog dish hub caps on the fat steels would look great though.

I suspected I might not be the only one to get excited about little tractors!
The next problem to solve is the steering, which is very heavy. To the point where it feels like you are going to break or bend something. I have checked the obvious things like tyre pressures. I have also taken apart and greased the kingpins and stub axles, etc. but it isn't much better.
One thing that doesn't look right is that the steering arm that runs from the steering column to the front axle has been extended and bent outwards. I have compared this to pictures of others I have seen, where the arm is straight. Also, on mine the steering linkage at the top of the kingpin points outwards, whereas on others points inwards. It can be switched 180 degrees but surely that would make the steering turn the wrong way.
Some more thought is required...

Did someone load it by pulling on the arm with a strap? They aren't terribly well constructed and I've seen the arm bent that easily; it won't steer well without the right geometry!
We mow three acres plus the ditches going each way from the property so I love some lawn tractor action.

Those steering arms bend fairly easy, either pulling the mower with it, or smacking the wheel into a tree.
I recently bought an old Westwood, 1980's one, just have to keep remembering that there are no safetys! Can even cut in reverse!
What engine is in there, B&S or Tecumseh? ...can't get a good look on my phone.

It's a Briggs & Stratton 12hp. I have done a bit more tinkering and had it driving backwards and forwards in all gears, so that is good news. It does sound a little bit rumbly underneath so I wonder if some bearings need attention somewhere.
I've also done a bit of investigation on the steering. It seems that the arm has been altered deliberately because the steering has been rather bodged up. It should have a sort of rack and pinion affair on the end of steering column. A quadrant, like a quarter of a gear, which the steering arm attaches to. It must have worn or broken in the past so someone has fixed it up with a go-kart like home made linkage. This would explain the reversed mechanism and the half turn lock to lock steering.
It can be driven as it is but it is not easy, so I will be on the lookout for someone breaking one with the correct parts.

I broke one of those a year or so ago. I still have some bits, problem would be identifying the bits for that tractor amoungst all the other bits I have. If you can provide pics/measurements of your bits I may be able to match them up?
I like tinkering with tractors too

If you still have any steering bits I would be very grateful. I need the steering quadrant and at least the pinion but maybe the whole steering column.

yours looks very similar to the Westwood Ti1200, search on the net there loads of pictures and exploded drawings which might give you an idea for parts required

May also have similar bits of old Westwood T1200 which may help you out as my son chopped it up along with an MTD to build this at 14: He was taught to MIG on a Saturday, built the chassis on the Sunday & finished this (all himself) in 17 days... then he built a trailer to take his disabled brother out

If you still have the steering pinion, quadrant, etc I would be very interested. It looks like he has put a rack on the rod?

LHD Pug 106 manual rack as anything based (even loosely) around a 32 Ford pickup HAD to be LHD!
Will go & have a look for steering stuff as he used none of it except the wheel centre and the shaft which he modified with 1/2" drive socket wobble joints to extend to the rack.

I haven't had time to look at the mower as working on the house has taken up all my time for the last couple of years. However, with the house nearly done and spring approaching I thought I would drag it out of my Dad's barn and have a look at it. I managed to get hold of a replacement steering mechanism and once I ground off the welded on bodges it went back together fairly easily. This meant that I could take it for a spin round the garden. It now steers as it should but the transmission is quite jerky. Not sure if it might be the drive belt or something more serious. The engine also cuts out from time to time but I think this might be some kind of fuel system issue.

love old tractors.
transmission issues could be the variable drive pulley slipping and catching...its a pulley that gets narrower with rpms, like a snowmobile or golf cart. (centrifugal, of sorts) I have polished them out with good success, but don't polish to a high gloss, just 1000 grit or so, wet.
if the pulley has wobble in it, it may be time to source another one.
There is also an idler pulley under there with a spring on it...sometimes these rust up and don't travel as much as they should, causing jumpy or erratic behavior.
engine cutting out could be a dirty carb. they are easy to rebuild with the right kit. even taking them apart and blowing out all the passages does wonders.

I would love a ride on mower like these. It is amazing what you can get cheap online as 'non runners'. I needed a chain for my Suffolk Colt, but for the same price bought this at the weekend for £30 with the intention of harvesting it. It was listed as the throttle not working and engine not running right. Got it home, cleaned out the carb, oil change and new spark plug and she runs fantastic. Now i have two
