These are on the edge of my radar at the moment, ive always liked them, i don't really see them as a replacement for the old beetle, they are a perfectly good shape in their own right. What they do have in common with the old beetle is that almost any style works. The new new beetle however, I don't like, they look odd, and they don't make me think 'beetle' but when they are lowered, they make me think Porsche. They need Porsche-ing.

They do have a chubby Porsche look about them.

Mabie that was their intention, make it look a bit more porsche and give it a different appeal. I mean.... Not so much And having seen this, i want to put some Rota Grid V's on a new beetle, not a new new beetle (Borsche?)

I was thinking about all this new shape old shape malarkey this week.
I guess people need to see the, as modern cars with lines that hark back to good, no great times in your memories.
But they are ultimately what they are and a bit Marmite, so if they do not fall in your line of love, then buy an alternative.
I like the new Mini, in early shape, but the latest harvest......?? Naaahhh.
Fiat 500L etc..... ? Naaahhh....
New Beetle in latest form..... ohhh yesss, but I do not see an original Beetle there, just a great evolution.
PS. I still want one to mod.

[/quote] I think I've still got an early ABT leaflet / brochure somewhere, they did a lot of add on bits for the New Beetle[/p]

What I don't like about the latest Beetle, as opposed to the one before it, as you can instantly tell it is front engined. The bonnetline gives it away.
The previous one was just a grown up version of the original, and although you know where the engine is, the proportions are bang on.

I've been thinking about picking up an early new beetle - patina anyone ? First rule of modifying...... It's your ride, Your rules. Simple. My Prozac is just that, lifts my mood, not had many haters, but that's fine too. This is PATINA. This is a WRAP. As is this. To me the whole patina look is trying too hard. And with something like a New Beetle where a lot of panels are plastic, the rust on plastic look........ ermmm?? Anyway, why not try something that messes with people's heads, maybe even a 70's type theme, like Rothmans Racing or the off-road look, it may be easy to do next get more love. Remember it is your car, your choices.

Thanks for the reply Grizz - those wraps are something else, I'm fairly set on a pickup truck but other 'options' keeps crossing my sights so to speak. If I do go for a pickup there'll be real patina

Bit late now......... But this would or could have been a perfect way to enter RRG'17 Under £100.00 High miles but could still have made a great canvas. At this price you could get your money back just weighing it in.

Back in 1999 bought a LHD one new from VW. Kept pulling to the right so severely my arm would ache. VW couldn't find fault and got a private investigator out on me to see if I was adjusting the steering myself so I didn't have to buy it and cancel the deal. Thankfully I never drove it and took VW to court after finding a newspaper article mentioning that the MK4 golf was experiencing the same issues.
The dirty tricks VW tried to pull were shocking - Eventually won and got my money back.
Car disappeared off the DVLA reg and was never seen again.
Put me off new cars for life.
Nothing spectacular to drive, with far too much headroom, and you sit closer to the back of the car than you do the front, with the size of the dash from the windscreen to the edge at least two feet. Not for me.
I did like the plastic wings and the boot release - would like to see one of these with a foot taken off the roof and made flat.

I used Google Images to search for. "Roof chopped New Beetle" and found a few.
May be some photochops too.
But does not seem common or easy to get done.

The hardest part would be cutting the glass straight - Don't think its possible with safety glass. The last thing I would want in a car would be one-off glass! I had a Mk1 honda Jazz once and I hunted high and low (pre internet) for a quarterlight. Found one, but spent a very long time removing the layers of paint from it as it had been used as an easel....

I haven't read the whole thread here, but if the back seats are tight and the boot is small then junk the back seat and make it a 2 seater . They did make speedster style concepts of the new and new new Beetles with an aero cover over the rear seats... I haven't sat in a new Beetle, but I have sat in a new new Beetle, and well, I didn't fit. I'm 6'6", and I fit fine in a VW Up which is a much smaller car. So they've done a right reverse TARDIS job on the new new Beetle. There's a V5 on auto trader for £650 if you don't want a 2.0 or diesel.

I wasn't keen on these at all until my friend Simon (Nefarious Pinstriping) got his and done a sort of Resto Cal on it - lowered over BRMs, bra and Empi racing stripes (wasn't keen on the roof rack but never am). That car changed my opinion completely and showed me they can actually look quite good.
I've been looking at them again myself recently as my girlfriend really wants a convertible and my daughter is already saying she wants one as her first car. Saw a very nice gunmetal grey one with a dark red leather interior and matching hood recently and they're very, very cheap right now. Problem is I already own 3* cars and the cost of keeping them all on the road is costing me a fortune...
*I appreciate this is a tiny amount compared to most on here

Grizz, if you can find one, the 1.8T is a hoot. Ran one for seven years up & down the A12 and surrounding areas, quickish(but easy to take upto @ 180bhp), reliable, and a bit of a Q car as well. Only gripe I had were the front seats, could do with more support when pressing on. Boot's not massive, but you can tuck things away, up under the wings.V5 Sport for more funnery!!!!
