Back of the net Norm! In Ely at the moment, so I'm going to head for San Fran and follow your advice. Sounds like a plan... Dan, the beat goes on! OK...... if it's literary travels you seek, The Grapes Of Wrath way way is the greatest "on the road" book of all time. So, right off the 101 near Monterey (and Cannery Row) is the National Steinbeck Museum in Salinas, complete with some of John's wanderlust vehicles. Complete with Patina! Would make a nice visit for any writer, or student of travel books..... about travelling.

Got to add my praise to the long list of others. Simply excellent thread, you have now idea how much I long to be there. Seeing the sites and hearing the sounds is one thing but bumping into the characters you have is just priceless - a true money can't buy experience.
You just have to turn this into a book, it must be done!!! (Just think, it could even bank roll the purchase and import of the mustang!)

Top grammar tips! Bought = purchased. Brought = relocated Lose = misplace/opposite of win. Loose = your mum

Wow, loving the thread! ;D I kept an eye out for you at the flats but didn't see you around, sorry! We were staying at the Wendover Nugget. I spent most of the week with Pro Per racing and even had the chance to do some licencing runs in their 'F' class car #503 topping out with obtaining my C licence (175mph) ;D We did the reverse route of the road race on the drive up from Vegas (Pontiac GT G6 convertible hire car....uuurgh!) on the 318, that's some brave speeds you guys got up to with the cross winds blowing across the flat bits, hat's off to you . We did the drive back to Vegas on the Sunday down the 93 so we saw a lot of the cars coming back up on the return leg but there was a helluva lot of police cars sitting around waiting for the racers to give it some welly in the 70mph limits.....quite a few were having a 'chat' with the drivers. I can post some pics from the flats on another thread or, if it's not considered bad form, I can add them to your thread and you can use them as you wish. Sorry about not managing the RR get together, that would have been a laugh but I'm glad you enjoyed yourself out there......now I've just got to get my car finished and on a boat ;D

Okay… So everything’s a bit slower now. Since my last update I’ve kind of dragged my heels, wandering away from Ely on Tuesday, then wandering back again. Because I went just north to this sprawling scrapyard I saw last year when we passed by on the same route. Before that though is the Mustang tale, basically I found a Datsun pick-up in an old Indian guys front garden. He said it was sold but was angling for more money I reckon. I think he sold it for about $500. Very solid… No pics of the Mustang as it had been buried under a load of boxes in a dark garage. It’s a 64 ½, old respray with the obligatory sun bleaching to the roof and panel edges. Been parked for between 15-20yrs depending on what story you believe. Running a ‘built’ 289, four speed manual, nice Hurst shifter and three spoke wood rim steering wheel. He wanted $6500, close but no cigar given that every brake component, fuel tank and lines plus other essentials would be needed, shipping, yada yada. So here’s some of the other spots in Ely… Lymans Auto Wrecking is a very special place, Lyman himself being your quintessential old boy, drinks beer distilled into an ice filled Gatorade bottle and told me to ‘go f*ck myself’ when I asked to take his picture… Fair do’s Lyman, no offence taken. Nice trailer you’ve got yourself there. I did turn up a few gems, and here they are for your delectation. Volkswagen van could have been mine for $200, no motor… Why oh why is it so far from a port? All I could think about was my rusty piece of sh*t ’79 bay at home. And how badly did I want to peel the skin off this Saab, roll it up and post it home? I know somebody on here has one these too, so check it! Sorry, but I’m 400 miles away in Lake Tahoe now, so can’t get any bits. Some general stuff. *Calling AlistairK* There was pile of wheels about a half-acre in size… These are just a few. Couldn’t find a matching set for the Chevy though… And what is this? I could only find one… But boy was it cool. All mag too… So that was Tuesday, barring a few back roads, dust filled spots and an incredible sunset.

Wednesday I started heading West on Highway 50, I got it wrong before. I came down from Wendover on ’93? I think… Highway 50 is the loneliest road in the States, hmmm… West to Eureka, but got distracted and turned off right towards a little place called Strawberry, missed that and ended up on a dirt trail which intersected with the old Poney Express route from east to west… Pretty dusty huh? Well it only got worse as I headed north towards Elko. And I mean really worse, at one point I was about twenty five miles from the last place I saw any sort of life, crawling along in first, praying it didn’t bog in… Oh and it was getting dark too. Needless to say I got out okay, and passed this spooky sight shortly afterward rejoining the tarmac. Those are bullet holes in the bus, lots of them and the building behind had an old abandoned tent pitched inside it. Getting a little bit jittered, I turn around and walk back to the van… To be greeted by this. Bother. So I set to swapping the wheel over, after busting the lock off the spare wheel cover as the dealer hadn’t seen fit to give me a key for it. Which is when karma took its turn, a cowboy stopped and asked if I was okay. After exchanging pleasantries he mentioned there was a bar about fifteen miles further up the road ‘first thing you’ll come to’. Remember Panhead Billy? Well he’d given me a fridge magnet with ‘Jiggs Bar’ written on it. Guess which bar it was I chanced on up the road? Very cool place, proper cowboy saloon. Spitoon, homemade Antelope jerky and a retro shotgun to see off the skunks with… I decided to get leathered and slept outside…

Thursday. Number one priority before making any more off road excursions in a two and a half ton lounge was to get the spare sorted. So I headed for Les Schwab tyres as advertised on the radio ad infinitum. Free flat fixes, and there was a Wal Mart close by to get a cheap replacement if that didn’t work. Turned out they could fix both (!) the flats without needing a new tyre. Which is when I enquired about new rims for the van, I’m not being funny but those arches needed filling badly… And oh boy did the satisfy my need. These bad boys are 10x15in and had a set of mud boggers mounted on them, the owner had upgraded and I could have them with new nuts, my tyres mounted and balanced, new valves for $278. Yes…. My 225/65’s prove to be quite the tyre for the job too, a tasty stretch. So that’s it for now, also picked up an old Western Flyer beach cruiser in Lymons that I’ve tooled about with. That’s hanging off the back of the van now and I’ve dragged the pair of them across the California border this morning. Got to hang around Lake Tahoe until Monday to pick up my 'Inglese' plates, then its the Pacific ocean here I come… *Message to self. Don't post from coffee shops, two large latte's and I'm now properly wired* PPS THanks again for all the comments guys, just read them back. If it's any good for you. Vans got plenty of spare seats and you're all along for the ride ;D

Remember it's not all so green over here. I am living in a 13yr old van, which doubles as my address. Sure it's cool, but it ain't forever... That said, crossing the border into NorCal... Oh man it's sweet here. Sell up! ;D

New rims look cool. Now all you need is some 'bags...it would be rude not to take advantage of the exchange rate, surely?
