i used to kill brake shoes for a pastime on my samurai when much wading or deep mud offroading...never needed to replace pads once i had done a disc conversion. admittedly 99% of the ones sold will see nothing more arduous than a pot hole but surely drums are just too old hat these days?

maybe...but they are still fit for purpose...drums arent , at least for serious off-roading which is my point unless you want ridiculous articulation but even then there are ways.

I think the problem is, many modern rear disc-braked cars have built-in and usually fairly small diameter drums for the handbrake, which are notoriously awkward to inspect or replace the shoes on (i.e., without first removing the calipers and discs first) so they get neglected.

For instance, I recently had a BMW E39 which although overall a great car, had a lousy and in fact, quite dangerous handbrake (it rolled off the drive into the road once, while I was shutting the gate, so had to chase after it!), even after I had gone to all the trouble of replacing the handbrake shoes. I've had similar problems with a few rear disc-braked cars, so it's made me rather wary of them.

I have worked for years in outback Australia. Done lots and lots of kilometers on dirt roads, had to take and wanted to take many
very rocky steep tracks in mainly rear drum braked vehicles like the old Troop carrier and Hilux. I never had a problem with my drum brakes. However I have always tried to avoid mud. Mud kills everything. Water will dry but mud will set like concrete.
I rather drive around mud then wreck my 4WD.
Driving through mud is in my mind! just a waist of time. If you flog it hard enough you can drive a Fiesta through knee deep mud.
There is little skill needed to drive trough mud.
Because I avoid mud and really like the Jimny the Jimny will suit me hopefully well.
As long as it can pull my 1100kg trailer.

I think the Mercedes emblem will confuse many people. I like that.
I used to have an old Holden Rodeo. I replaced all badges/emblems with BMW ones.
Non car enthusiasts just thought I had a BMW 4wd they never saw before

I think the quoted braked towing capacity is 1300kg.

I’d really like one. I don’t need another car, but the ease of use and convenience of our family Octavia is very seductive and sometimes the last thing I want to do is work on my Land-Rover. I’m also massively tempted with an Up! Gti...

There's a discussion on Pistonheads about the new Defender (after some spy shots) and the Jimny was mentioned. Looks like a better Defender replacement than a over-complicated Discovery based Defender. I was intrigued enough to visit the Suzuki web site, might be a good replacement for the wife's Discovery 2.

But drum brakes, hate them with a passion have vowed never to buy another car with them and as has been said useless in mud.

Only 2,000 units for UK and all sold. Waiting list for any further would be pointless as they gave been allocated to Japanese market as it size fits into the K car market.

Just wait til they are out of fashion and import one
