This is probably something that bothers only me but the front indicator/sidelight units on a chrome bumper MGB are clearly the wrong way round. Imagine if you flipped them 180 degrees the flat part would be in line with the grille and the sidelights would be pointing forwards rather than out to the corners. I just imagine that a worker on the MG production line just put them on the wrong way round and (this being BMC in the 60s/70s) the supervisor didn't dare tell him off for fear of starting yet another strike! Another more general one is indicator switches being on the wrong (ie right hand) side of the steering column. It just makes more sense to me to have it on the same side as the gear shift, that way your right hand (in a RHD car) cab stay on the wheel all the time. The thing is the white part has to be outside the indicator as it's a marker (sidelight) light, the reality is the lense was from another car and they didn't bother to redesigne it, i have a wire wheeled chrome bumper in for a blow over at the mo so i know what you meen, the first thig i did was remove the dam things cos they annoyed me so much The one thing that really annoys me (and i meen REALLY annoys me to the point i spend money sortinag it or sell the vehical) is gear spacings on diesels, why did manufacturers think OH it's a diesel therefor it needs a rediculasly low first and huge gap to 2nd?, on the P100 i hated the ratios so mutch i fitted a car box with closer ratios, on the mondeo i actually gave it to the ex wife cos it annoyed me so much (no alternative box to fit), i can drive around anything but poorly spaced ratios pee me the F off, no idea why just really gets under my skin to the point i refuse to drive cars after a while like some sort of primadonna i flounce off and refuse to have anything to do with them, so now i drive a shed of a pug 106 1.5D instead of a well sorted mondeo I'm ust be mad

Has anyone else noticed that all aftermarket headunits seem to be designed with Europe in mind with the volume control on the left away from the driver, that's a little frustration for me. Not really every factory radio i have is the same, volume on the left ?

Things that bug me mostly revolve around rear lights; 1) Moderns with lights built into the tailgate. Because of safety, they have to have a second set in the bumper so if the boot is up, there are still lights to be seen - ie Most audi 'Q' models and the A1. So all the work done by having nice neat integrated lights is lost by having to have a slimline second set that are basically never used. I have no idea if you can fail an mot if one of these fallback lights bulbs is defective, but it's just plain stupid. Second is related - and is how many 4x4s that have a tyre on the back have strange blanks over the normal rear light position and lights in the bumper instead. I think it's if the rear door is open and the tire covers the lights (see above for safety). Seems crazy to me. I'm sure I'll think of more

Alfa Romeo 147&156 gear stick and linkages. They're made out of cheese causing the gear stick to become very sloppy with stiff gear changes and a gear stick that doesn't centralise when in neutral. The linkages need regular greasing.
The front upper suspension arms are made from the same cheese and you'll be lucky to see 12k miles out of them.
Electric windows work great in the summer but work very slow in the winter despite a complete strip down and re-grease etc.
The washer bottle filler neck is tiny and very awkward to fill.
But that's Alfa Romeo ownership for you and that's way they are great cars because they are far from perfect and so have bags of character.

Phaeton is derived from Greek mythology. Phaethon (with an extra "h") was the illegitimate son of Helios the sun God; Greek gods loved to spread their seed far and wide and frequently fathered an entire squadron of bastards with human laydees (Oh, no husband, I wasn't unfaithful to you, it must have been a God... he appeared to me as a swan/shower of gold/satyr/delete as applicable and ravished me before I could say 'I'm spoken for, fella'). Anyway, in an effort to prove his divinity, Phaethon took his father's chariot, which pulled the sun across the sky, to show what a puissant demigod he really was. Unable to control Helios' mighty horses, he went out of control and the sun was getting too close to the Earth. Realising the planet was about to get burned up, Zeus luzzed a thunderbolt at it, stopped global calamity but unfortunately also blowing Phaethon into his constituent atoms. well, it could have happened Phaetons are thus named because they are open to the sun. The VW Phaeton is therefore an utter aberration on every level. Arguably even blashpemous... And becos thread need picktchers and in keeping with the OP, have a 512/Testarossa thing with an outright crime against wheels Front Back Really? That ferrari highlights my point exactly, except I don't recall EVER seeing a car with mismatched wheeels on the same side!!! They have taken my original point of having "sided" alloys and then ruined it by putting one of each on the same side of the car. Unbelievable.

The wheel thing doesen't bother me at all. I always loved XR3i dog leg alloys. My pick up has US Wheel "blades" on it and I never gave them a second thought. How on earth you VW van mob can step out of the house every morning to be faced with these mirrors is beyond me! That Ferarri would annoy me though...

Locking wheel nuts and centre caps not lining up. I am mechanic by trade and every job I do has the valve at the bottom, centre cap lined to that and the locking nut symmetrical. Looks so much neater

Finding out the hard way that i NEVER want to take this out again..... gearbox chassis mount in just the right spot to make it difficult. Kids were highly entertained during extraction process Worse is finding out that cv's are almost impossible to take apart. Cutting disc is recommended method. Circlip groove gets hammered in service & develops burrs that the circlip can't get past.

Moderns that wink their fog lights at you when turning a corner! Does it really help or just the gimmick i think it is? Haha, my current daily is the first I've had that does this. Makes no difference, the only reason I know it does it is because I saw the reflection in the car in front! My theory on this is manufactures realised that after all their research and developement of indicators that most people don't bloody use them! (Mostly german cars ahem) So they made some automatic ones and discuised them has fog lights to give us all half a chance to figure out where they are going..rant over

What idiot designed the Ford OHC six and put the distributor so far up under the inlet manifold as to be unreachable by a normal human? The same one who put the alternator directly beneath the power steering pump so it could drown in leaking power steering oil. With you on that one....... but thats easy job compared to accessing the airbag module up under the dash in e series coons. Took us 3 hours to extract that from parts car. It's all done by touch cos darn near impossible to see it. Took only 1 hour to swap it into nephews car, trick is don't waste the day trying to refit all 3 bolts!!!

Focus mk2 indicators not self cancelling a lot of the time . Infuriating until you get used to it - I'm sure Clarkson mentioned it years ago.
Saabs.... why have weird big rubber keys which are bulky to carry around or fit in a pocket ? And why put the ignition switch in the centre consul where RHD users have to use there left hand or learn over to operate ? And the keys get in the way of the only place to put a drink AS THERE ARE NO CUPHOLDERS !
TORX BITS IN GENERAL , WHAT WRONG WITH A NORMAL NUT .
] Vaguely related to topic [ .... the quality of car parts and price . You can guarantee that a average garage will fit the most crappy cheap parts going - i just had my brakes done and i swear the discs are made of oil shale stone and the pads of belly pork .. absolutely dire . And the price of parts is beyond a joke . Two wishbones for a 14 year old civic were about £140 each , when they clearly cost about £6 to make , and TBH how many of them are going to be sold nowadays ?

The rear trim/bumper alignment issue on the mk5 cortina estate! As the back end is the same as a mk4, the rear bumper is lower than the rest of the side trim and as a result we have THIS: ^^ while we're here...those type of rear fogs which were factory, but look like they've been added on

Hi, I still don't get the term SUV. It's either a sports or a utility I don't see how it can be both. It's like having a convertible estate. Colin A convertable estate is a phaeton.

It just makes more sense to me to have it on the same side as the gear shift, that way your right hand (in a RHD car) cab stay on the wheel all the time. I find quite the opposite. Cars that are designed as rhd originally pretty much always have the indicator on the rhs of the column. It being on the left is a hangover from cars that are lhd originally then the manufacturer adapts them for our market. The reasoning being you have one hand to change gear at the correct time, and you can just click the indicator on at the appropriate moment with one finger whilst still having one hand on the wheel, instead of having to change gear once, hand back to column to indicate, then back to shifter to change gear again. Has always made sense it being that way to me anyways.

Worse when the decide to simply remove the globes from the old 'superfluous' rear lights (just because they might not be seen from some angles) so you can be looking at a set of 'lights' that will never light. Modern indicators mounted in headlights to make them harder to see at night. Ventilation systems that cannot give you fresh air (& require noisy fan forcing), doubly so those that cannot give you fresh/cool to face & warm to feet or windscreen at the same time. People with directional wheels that mix them up with L & R on each side.

One thing that (as an owner) always annoyed me more than it should was the horn grilles not lining up with the indicators on the S1 XJ6, see below. I've run Jaguars since the early 70's and never noticed! Now of course I will never get the image out of my mind. (takes laser level to front of 420 to check line up of lights and imitation ventilation grilles!)
