That's the biggest kicker really, getting a decent turn of speed without high fuel consumption. The solution is normally turbo-diesel and that could be a good route to go since recent bad press has kept prices down on diesels. Comes back around to the 75 Tourer too which is available in BMW diesel flavour and certainly no slouch while also being comfortable and practical. £2k should get you quite a good one, my housemate very recently got himself a facelift 75 tourer diesel for less than a grand and it's an awful lot of car for the money and doesn't feel old-fashioned or indeed as old as it actually is. They also perform superbly well in real world crashes, should the worst happen. To get the best bang for your buck, avoid the big luxury/executive names, particularly the German stuff, and you should do pretty well. Also, don't dismiss 90s stuff, the really big barges from the era still measure up to modern car performance, often with better economy and even moderately good crash safety. In fact, there's this Maxima which ticks every single box, including budget. It's a long way from Surrey but there's room in the budget for collection costs. retrorides.proboards.com/thread/197609/1994-nissan-maxima-offers-teesside

X5's with the 3 litre diesel are available around the £2.5k mark, bloody good engines.

Lots of very helpful suggestions Thanks for that. I agree that perhaps wafty barge isn't exactly what I've been looking at. Basically I want something big, lazy, automatic ideally, that doesn't take the curse word with fuel consumption but has a half decent turn of speed if I do decide to put my foot down. Budget wise I'm at the bargain basement end of things with maybe £2k to spend at a push! Big ask I know, but I know there's plenty out there. Funnily enough I've looked at all your suggestions before you suggested them. I was recently looking for something with the same list of 'wants' and bought this.......... One owner with a full Volvo SH and a years MOT for only a little more than you've set the budget at. Big and wafty, power everything, leather, D5 diesel version with 4WD, you can get a wardrobe in it, drive across fields and it's actually surprisingly quick for a big heavy car (probably why the Old Bill and Paramedics use them). I get at least 37mpg round town (it's an auto) and more on a run. I bought it as a stop gap but love it - very useful bit of kit that's nice to drive and (so far) has been very reliable. Worth considering the Volve XC70.

Currently driving a '68 Karmann Ghia as my daily. Don't ask about previous cars - there have been way too many and I stopped counting at 160!

It wouldn't have the kudos of a big burbly V8 but it wouldn't have the running costs either. If you're not intending to do big miles in it the V8 might be realistic?

Good choice. I loved my old 5, and that was only a 2.8. Really comfortable even sitting on the floor with coilies on.

I was going to suggest an e39 and then I get to the end of the thread and see you've chosen the correct car. Very good choice Sir!

How far off your budget was it? Looks a neat example! It was in the £1500ish bracket.

I still haven't forgiven a friend of mine for trading one of those in on a Kia for buttons instead of selling it to me. Nice ones like that still look good.

Saab 9-5? or a 9000 hatchback (just as much space) if you can find one. I used to own a 400hp Saab 9000 which I absolutely loved. Unfortunately I just couldn't afford to run it at the time so had to sell it on. Haven't seen or heard of it since so don't actually know what happened to it in the end. Put mine up to stage 3 - Just added 3 inch downpipe & t7 boost solenoid. Now to go any quicker I need a holset hx35w, green giant injectors, bigger fuel pump, and to first upgrade the braking system. What did you have done to yours?

Some 9000's, a 900, an RX8 & a beetle
