You must be The Toledo Centre of Excellence, and all the remaining Toledos have heard about you and want to come hang out at your house; "Please Sir, may i have a twin-cam upgrade?", or "I will gladly sacrifice my bits and pieces if it means my brothers can survive!" John

O/S tail light repair don't know if anyone else as encounter their mig struggling to arc when using super strength magnets bought this 2hp 60l compressor local to me cheap unfortunately the motor had seen better days so back on ebay for this 4 pole motor, hoping its going to have the capacity for spraying, plan is to prime the car and depending how that goes I ll have a go at the top coat in an attempt to get all round the car bought these cheap dollies which started to buckle forcing the castors to tuck under when shifting the car around,so welded this web on to strengthen mopping up last little welding jobs also got the boot lid and drivers door shot blasted to get rid of the deep rust and gave them a coat of epoxy thanks for looking

That's a yes on the magnets - and they do not have to be super strength either - I always try to keep them as far away from where I am welding as possible.

Yep magnets do cause a problem, I think the magnet pulls the molten metal towards itself not allowing the metal to flow to the weld area

Yes on magnets here too. Even the cheap corner clamp magnets do it if I get too close. Seems to drag the arc towards the magnet when I've had it.

Cant understand why people get old rusty Triumphs, modify them and try to drag them, kicking and screaming, into the modern world.
It's mental, just like the cars when their finished.

rear o/s wing and inner arch are toast drilling out the spot welds but where to split the rear wing?,if you buy nos from Rimmers you get the complete B pillar, window frame and the tail light panel I ve decided just to replace the skin, and make the join half way up the C pillar donor wing in decent nick, had to remove part of rear sill to gain access to spot welds finally separated a lot of the neighbours around here are furloughed and sunbathing so not trying to make to much noise but its difficult to split welds quietly home made weld splitters,12m allen key and an old mechanical saw blade, thanks for looking

Another fascinating looking project, is the red one going to be a standard resto or a fast road weapon?

Always a great thread to learn something and be impressed by.
Question: did the FWD versions of this body style also use a Herald-style ladder chassis, our were they full unibody?
Thanks, John

Thanks, John Hi John both were uni body, there are subtle differences between FWD and Toledos ,FWDs have independent rear suspension more like a Triumph 2000 than a Herald, were as Toledos are live axle,Toledos are more down market, thanks

Well I have just read your thread from the start. And I can only say WOW! I love Triumphs, and my biggest mistake in my car owning history is selling my Dolomite Sprint back in 1983. I am in awe of your skill and vision. I hope to see it in the flesh if I can get to the Dr gathering and maybe say hello.

hi small update,I know it doesn't look like it but dozens of hours spent trying to get body something like for spraying,I'm a novice at prep/paint work Ive always paid someone to spray my cars but you don t get much for a £2500 job like the last car,you can get a lot of equipment for that, plus they always seem to put their own touches you've not asked for,ie stone chip in the engine bay, underseal half way up the sills so thought Id have a go ,if I make a balls of it its down to me. o/s also needs quite a lot of filler, knocked all the high spots down got the engine and box ready for pulling so I can prep and spray the bay,its a real doddle to work on with the wings and front off almost as good as a GT6,thanks for looking.

Paintwork is the most time consuming job, hours spent getting the surfaces the correct profile. I agree with you that nothing spoils a restoration more than a half arsed prep and paintjob. The times i've seen cars that have shonky looking front/ rear valances with bends and dings for example. Keep up the good work, nothing wrong with having a go. The satisfaction will be worth it.
