Street Machine PaddockBorn in 1979 Street Machine magazine was a cornerstone of the British modifying scene, from the 70's show rod era through the 90's and to the early 2000's Street Machine showed us what was out there and what was possible. Featuring any number of iconic cars it informed and shaped what would ultimately become the retro scene. 2017 saw the magazine re-launch, with its range of hot rod, custom and other modified stuff intact. We're very pleased to have the magazine as the first of our curated paddocks. We will be pulling in feature cars from across the run of the magazine, including hot rods, street cars, show rods and with the help of the B289 VWs of the era. We will be revealing the cars we've had confirmed for display over the coming months, and we're still looking for more. So if you know an ex-feature car or if there are any you would like us to try and hunt down (we've already been on the phone to Germany tracking down one of the cars!), we'll do our best to find it. We've already got some surprises and cars not seen in public for a long time. Retro Rides Weekender is going to be unlike any show you've been to.

Cool idea! Look forward to this.
If only my SM featured hydraulic Skoda still existed. Or the J2 van...

You are of course correct - Pinball Wizard.

If you could get Terry Ross's red mk1 Cortina or the old Nick Arlett blue mk1 Cortina also that was in the double feature that would be a perfect sight to see two genuine south London cortinas! both are still around...
I shall be there also I hope and anticipate.

Ehhh, this is a long shot, but in the 70's & 80's there was a van that was always on the Birmingham custom car scene and I think it travelled around the UK to shows. It was (probably) a Mk1 Ford Transit cab but moutned to the back was a giant can of Pepsi or Coca Cola. It wasn't an advertising vehicle AFAIK, it was somebody's theme... and the whole thing... it was beautiful. If any of the SM team know of that or have it in their archives and had any leads to it... I'd really love to see that thing again. Long shot, I know. But what the hell. So excited about this weekend! EDIT: Here it is!

Oh, and if there was any chance of tracking down Wobbly Bob's Bedford CF too, I'd love to see that.

A scene before my time but very excited to see what this paddock has to offer I don't think there can ever be a scene quite like the 70's and 80's UK Custom scene. I don't know how people did it, but there were some truly amazing custom vehicles around... fibreglass a-go-go, radical reshaping, insanely fat n thin wheels and rear ends lifted so high you could stand under rear bumper in the rain. My dad had a friend who had a Morris Marina Coupe that he'd customised. Quite mild, but it stood like a door wedge on enormous rear wheels and was all chromed underneath. It had a deep blue candy flake paint job with subtle edging lines and fillets. It was getting the chance to cruise around in that which really got me excited about cars as a wee sprog. I've always wanted a Marina Coupe to try and recreate something similar. Speaking of which... I seriously pondered buying this about 5 years ago when it was put up for sale. I decided (quite sensibly I felt) that it deserved to go to someone with a decent garage to keep it in, and I let it pass, but I would be very happy to be the owner of this beasty... (would love to have a closer look at this!)

My little brother owned the Cavalier Coupe that's in the bottom-right picture. I went and collected it from Havant for him. Had a C20XE IIRC. On the way back we got lost and had to turn around and he ended up donuting it on someone's front lawn.

Does he still have it? ... that kind of build was the genesis of the whole 'Retro' scene, would be great to have it at the event as part of the line up.

I like it much better now HoTWire slightly OT but who was the RR member who was building a modified moggy back in the early days of the forum - often wondered what happened to it?
