Precisely it @suprisingskoda. I also took a took. Bar a 350Z which is quick(ish) nothing else really comes that close, bar maybe a chipped MkIV Gof or an Audi TT 225.
The easy car to do are now worth alot! The values of E30s has surprised me. Christ, the values of 944 Turbos is strong! Before, that was a great way to get a cheap car with 300BHP for around the £6k mark. That's not been the case for quite some time.

How about anything for about 4k and then a shed-load of nitrous? By eliminating any kind of progressive controller, just a button for giggles, it'll feel even scarier!

4.2 Audi S4 are under budget and with a miltec exhaust sound awesome, think you can chip them to rs4 performance too.

Fiat coupe 20vt A hybrid turbo/intercooler should see around 350 ponies and they weigh under 1300kgs. They are great fun!

Subaru Legacy GTB, a friend has one with an uprated turbo and an Impreza WRX engine, runs about 18 psi, 340 bhp 330 lbft, and being an older one its only 1400 kg. its also for sale if the right offer comes along, it'll be well within your budget and you can easily get a 2.5 engine in it withing your budget too for more grunt

Meet the GassyAlfa - GTV V6 with NoS. About to appear in print and on film. Up to 350bhp if you're brave... I haven't (yet!) but it sounds like a bit of a hoot! A mate of mine nitroused his Beetle and went from mid-12 second quarter miles down to mid 10's. It's just over double the OPs budget, but goes to show the potential. My 14-second Beetle (which would probably go 13's with practice), through various trades and collecting parts over years probably owes me £6k, and a little squirt should see it dip into the 12's. I did get a bargain on the motor tho!

Mk5 Golf Gti Edition 30 + remap

From spec, this would knock your tits off.. forum.retro-rides.org/thread/199703/cinquecento-sleeper-232hp-midlands-6500onoI'd be offering £3-4k Subaru Legacy's are great cars but you may find it a little on the heavy side after having owned a Impreza Turbo. I know you've had one before but can't hurt to look for another nicely tuned one. Look at anything with 1JZ or 2JZ engine, Lexus GS300, Lexus Soarers, Toyota Chasers, Supras etc Maybe also worth looking for a Toyota Celica GT4, Gen2 MR2 Turbo(maybe not suitable as it's a 2 seater). Toyota Caldina GT-T is a 4wd 250bhp monster with all the convenience of being a wagon, your wife will definitely approve. You can also get a nice spec'd forged Toyota Starlet Glanza within £6K. They are only 1.3 turbo but forged ones can achieve 300+ bhp which is seriously quick in a little lightweight hot hatch. I own one and rear seat space is very good for a 2 door. Can seat 2 grown men (6'0) comfortably for long journeys so it will be fine for your kids. Wild card? Fiat Coupe 20V Turbo. 220 bhp, 0-60 in 6 seconds and will take you right up to 155mph.

Surprisingskoda is RIGHT on my wavelength here. I don't want a big luxo merc/bmw etc with a huge engine, a mk2 golf with a mental swap is more my thing, or as SS said the go to cars of the Evo/Scooby
Not interested in anything American as I have my truck to hoon about in when it's done and I'm not an expert mechanic like many on here so I think that's why the Scooby/Evo's appeal as they are get in and go, or at least my old Scooby was.
Tbh I could just buy another one for cheap, there was a wagon on Ebay for £1600 !! ( I really don't like the wagon shape however) but it's like roggering an ex G/f never the same the 2nd time around hence not diving in with a Scooby for ease.
SS- I definitely want something a bit less school run haha

I got my mk2 off one, fully resprayed 1.8t converted for far less than it's worth. If I get a few bits tided up & chuck a MOT on it I could triple my money.

lots of ace suggestions so a big thank you for those. To answer a few
Unlike Jezza I have no love for Alfas Big mercs/bimmers etc are a no no That chincy is an awesome machine but not my style Fiat Coupe is another no no
However the Audi S4, Starlet and the Caldina have grabbed my interest. I'm amazed how cheap the older S4's are!!
Fresh & Minty, yeah I need one car rather than a few cars that do different things, I have our new Family car and my Yank Truck, this idea was formed from trying for the last 2yrs to shed my wife of her terrible Chrysler GV, she has finally agreed if she gets the Merc, which leaves things wide open for my "daily". Our driveway won't handle another two cars.
MercDan, good advice. I'll hit the FB groups too. and glad to hear the return visit on the ex worked out

You can get better Mk2’s than that in your budget. I sold my 20vt Nevada beige that I built for 5.5k. All that needed was a k04 setup and a map and it would have seen 265bhp.
That mk3..... c63 eater.... I have my doubts... especially if it’s running a standard turbo on the auq... and you best hope it hasn’t randomly dropped into limp mode like he mentions.
