My parents hated BMXs, and where I grew up in London everything got nicked anyway so I had well used old bikes.
düdo comes from the 1973 Mercedes 406 van that I signed up with here a few years ago. This series of van was built in Düsseldorf (from 1967-1984 approx) and are thus nicknamed 'Düdo' - I'm not German, just washed up here.

Were you building a turbo 1200 VW motor at some point in the past or am I getting you mixed up with somekne else with "Hot" in their username? Not me, had a couple of VWs (66 Beetle, 72 Bay) but never managed to get anywhere near modifying them how I wanted. Did plenty of research though :/ Early 2000s? Real name David? I'm trying to put a face to the (user)name!

There are quite a few people called Dave involved with old cars, especially in Land Rover circles.
Part of the reason a lot of people know me as Das in the real world. Those who read Classic Land Rover Magazine will know me better as Dave Marsh though.

That recalls a teenage ache. I never had a BMX, not even a humble Raleigh Burner. The PK Ripper! Don't start. Well, I came very close to matching your experience. My parents could never afford to buy me a proper BMX, but they always wanted the best they could possibly afford for me, and one day my dad happened to be Woolworths and noticed they were selling what was advertised as a "BMX style" bike. It was called a Hawk Scorcher, and it cost the princely sum of £25. The bottom-of-the-barrel Raleigh Burner was retailing for £85 at the time. That's how bad the Scorcher was. I knew it was the best I could ever expect, and I loved it for what it was. That very first morning that I wheeled it out of the garage though was the most humiliating moment of my life so far. Everyone else p*ssed themselves laughing. They had various grades of Burner, plus a couple of Mongooses and RedLines from the rich kids on the posh estate. They all knew it was the Woolworths BMX style bike, and they ripped me mercilessly. It was humiliating and I wasn't welcome to join in with their BMX adventures. The thing was though, the frame was essentially good. It was light and strong. It was only the components that were cheap and which let it down. For years, I worked hard at a paper round, a saturday morning job in a local grocery shop, and did jobs at home for extra pocket money, and I replaced everything on that bike until eventually all that was left original was the frame, surrounded by a bunch of very highly sought-after components. I read BMX Action bike avidly and would be the first to know about and get the latest pedals, brake calipers, handlebars, rims, seat posts, cranks, tyres etc... I even got my dad to ask an engineer friend to make me a set of stunt nuts way before they actually appeared on the market in the UK. De-badged, nobody who didn't know already could ever work out what the bike was, but everybody assumed it was insanely expensive (it probably was by the time I'd replaced everything. I was bloody good at ground and ramp tricks (not so good at racing), and could table top and 360 before most people had mastered a yankee... and it eventually earned respect... even amongst my friends who knew what it was originally, and who's Burners weighed about twice as much, and had gone rusty and wobbly didn't work very well any more. My bike was crisp, perfect and ran perfectly, right to the day I sold it to buy a racer. I loved that bike. :......) The original Scorcher BMW styled bike ^

Started selling high end Hi Fi at he age of 14 in 1990. Moved to Oz in 2001 to study and worked part time in a HiFi store selling amongst other brands Italian high end speakers from Sonus Faber. Still got a pair in the living room, but with kids they seldom get used. I'll never ever sell them. Well actually maybe if I upgrade when the kids get older and more careful

When I joined these hallowed pages my car of choice was a 1300 Dolomite, which I still have its sat behind my unit awaiting the 'one day restro', it was also my username on most forums I visited in the early days of internetting. I don't use my real name due to my job I'm not very well liked (some say its because of my personality and not job) which has resulted in the inevitable trolls calling me a troll.

My first 3 cars were Nova GTE's, despite paying 2700 as a 17 year old to insure a £600 car. I still have the 3rd Nova and it's currently 'resting' My dad and I did a front end rebuild and 20XE conversion about 10 years ago and since dad's accident, I have vowed to restore it to take my twin boys out in the car grandad built. Oh and I was born in 1986

I’ve had a few PK Rippers and they aren’t that great, best bike I had in that time period was a Skyway TA Team. Great geometry.
