I’ve had 4 MK3s, 3 ‘97s and a ‘94 - One ‘97 was so rotten in 2011 the shock came though the back strut tower. It had been repaired with bits of old washing machine whe the floor pan rotted. What changed in the ‘95 so-called facelifts most of the vw range at that time were bad for corrosion, I’m am MOT tester and Polo’s and Golf’s around then were rerrible, allegedly they sourced a cheaper supply of steel and it was below par. And then when then MK4 was launched i’ve Never had an issue with any of my VW’s!

Update The only rotten panel is the tailgate, but a lucky find in a breakers I got a rot free panel and it’s even Windsor blue👍 I’ve also received the book pack with a fully stamped up history and it has never left my home town in ownership since new, I also put a battery on it today and everything works including central locking windows and sunroof, so I’m a very happy bunny😋

A mk3 that doesn't need welding?! Thats a rarity in itself! Tom My Mk3 VR6 daily driver has done 169000 and has never been welded. I think that they either rot really badly or they don't rot at all. So.... two pages of general chats about Golf, etc. and only two pics of the project car. Is that all?

I’ve not quite got the hang of how to post pictures yet🤔 so just a couple of the scabby tailgate, the replacement tailgate and the original service book.

Anorak Alert! The tailgate rust is due to electrolysis, I used to do a lot of heated rear window removals on these under warranty when they were newish, VW had a modified window to replace the original one's after the rust was treated, The original heated rear windows had a heated element that was very low which caused the electrolysis and rust, The later modified window didn't have the low heated element thus stopping the rust,

people jacking them on the sills where there down fall , mk 2 where worse This affects quite a few cars and as fair as I can tell is down to carelessness and laziness on the garage's part. It's good to see a Mk3 Vr6 being saved. There are not many of these around now .

Looks great, really glad a mk3 is being saved!
Have had a few myself, a rust free GTI, and a lovely VR6 which turned out to be crusty underneath.
With so many being used as engine donors for earlier golds and dying due to rust, its good that you are keeping this early one going, the engines do make a great noise,
