is how much?
If I dragged a family hatchback (say, ooooh, green mondeo-sized) down to the breakers, is it closer to £20 or £200?
Reckon I can probably make more taking the good bits off the car and cubing it, and cashing the tax in. Question - do I need to cash the tax in whilst the V5 is still in my name, or is after I sign it over at the breakers OK?

I´v e just weighed in my old W123 280E and got 100 Euros per tonne (incl. glass, plastic, interior, boot full of cr*p etc.)
If you just take in scrap metal the going rate is 140 Euros per tonne at the moment. Got an extra 8 Euros just for the old battery.
Sorry it´s not much help but will be interesting to see any price differencebetween Uk and Deutschland.

Ooooh, do they take any old metal? Got a huge big CD rack that weighs loads, some old doors from a T3 and I can fill the floorpan with concrete and let it dry..... Might try the ford breaker first, see if he wants it as a parts donor but if not, scrapyard ahoy!

Took a depoluted shell to Sims Metal (back of Nottingham showcase) on Tuesday and they were paying £85/tonne.
Can see why there are so many pik... people... going around collecting scrap - Good wagon load a day is £2k a month tax free.
Edit: Yeah, take any metal - mine had a subframe, (drained)gearbox, and couple of seats in. They just weighed trailer before and after unloading and paid accordingly.
Not sure if you can tow stuff in or not, but there is a pick up point for un-depoluted(?) vehicles, but I guess they pay less?

price of scrap is quite high at the moment, thats why the supply of free cars has dried up, 6 months ago it was costing you money to weigh cars in so lots of freebies about, all going down the scrappy again now though.

I wouldn't bother with the Ford breakers. Get straight down to the scrappy. Watch they don't try and charge you for any tyres that are on the car.

I'd avoid filling anything with concrete or water, they're getting wise to that idea now. Oil drums must be cut to make sure there's nowt in, and they check fuel tannks at my local too.
Also make sure you weigh Catalytic converters in separately on the more modern stuff. They have platinum in em and are worth £40 a go depending on where you go.
I had a scrap montego round the back of mine in the spring, travellers came at night and took the whole thing and a spare gearbox and cyl head. Tw*ts.
Gonna weigh in some old alloys this weekend.

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

There's a company advertising in my local paper - 70 quid minimum for any scrap car. Last year I had to pay them 40 pounds just to come down here.

This sort of talk makes me think I really need to get the dead C32 on my drive tucked round the back of the house. Biggish car which I’ve started to strip, set of alloys on it, and the neighbours would just assume I’d finally decided to scrap it if they saw a Hiab lifting it away. Bye bye lots of useful, expensive spares and some tools etc.

Locally: £80 if they collect it from you. Some are offering to pick up in 30 minutes! £120 if you drop it off to them. Thus thats why even sheddy beavertails on ebay are going for a fortune. Do your normal job thru the week, pick up a few scrap cars at the weekend for some pocket money. May even find something worth keeping . Well, thats what I'd do if I had a truck. No joy selling the Mondeo Pillock..?

Scraps on the way down a little at the moment. My local is only paying £85 per ton. Still not to be sniffed at! Highest ive ever known it in brum was about £110ish. Lowest was £8 but that was a while ago.
don't take it to a breakers, take it to a metal processors. Remove the wheels, wave goodbye to the car and hello to about £100ish. don't forget to bring your mate along for a lift home.

A bit of interest in the Mondeo, but I'm just wondering if it's worth more as scrap. There's a few bits I can break off it too (stereo + speakers, spoiler, lights etc, nothing maor just easily ebayed stuff) to up the price, and it'd still weigh more or less the same for weighing in.
