I say if it's cheap, buy it. You only live once and even if you can only afford to run it for a couple of months it's gotta be worth blastin' round in a supercar for that time! ;D
I'm not a sensible person.

Years ago I was considering chopping my MKIII Supra in for one. It wasn't cheap, but I could've bought it. The salesman made the mistake of not only telling me it had extensive history, but shoving it under my nose for inspection. The previous owner had spent somewhere in the region of £6k in the preceeding six months!! Much as I loved the car, it wasn't a legacy I fancied inheriting. So I let the Supra bankrupt me instead!!!

£2500 is not cheap for a 928. Go and look on Ebay at the completed listings. This was £1800: And this was £2000: Beware. Charlie

£2500 is not cheap for a 928. Charlie Surely the price depends on the condition? buy the best you can afford. Cheap ones are cheap for a reason. Your better off spending £5k on a well cared for car with loads of history than £1500 on a nail. Oh yeah, And deffo get one.

Look, everyone's saying 'money pit', and that parts are hugely expensive.
I say buy it, hammer it till it dies then break it - I reckon you'd be quids in. Then simply repeat the process. ;D

Does anyone remember when Top Gear bought one? Did about 100 miles before the Nikersil plating came off the all Ali block and it dropped down to a V 6.5 !!
They ended up breaking it and turned it into furniture!

Does anyone remember when Top Gear bought one? A sub £1000 scrapper. Not really a surprise it didn't last. Maybe all the old 70's 'J tin' should be scrapped or bangered as getting hold of cheap parts can be a problem?

Is there some sort of relationship between the V8 in those Porkers and the Mercedes 4.5 V8? I might be talking rubbish. Yep, 5.0 V8 powered porker is the same V8 as in a 500 SEC, IIRC the 16v porker is identical and there's a later variant that's 32v which is the same bottom end with twin cam heads. Porsche parts prices are horrific though, coil for an '84 944 = £120+vat (and it looks like a normal coil too, but apparently it's not)

I wonder if there are specialist parts places now, maybe it's worth doing a search in Germany on the web?
When I ran an XJ-S V12 it was fantastic to drive and parts weren't that expensive because there were places who broke them for spares and did new parts cheaper than the dealer.
A Jag is probably easier to run if you're after a 140mph big old cruiser

Ok, so some of the smaller bits are a touch expensive, but not cripplingly so. I think you could probably run one without expecting to spend thousands a year on it. I'd imagine some of these huge bills could be related to getting dealers and specialists to do work on them. I'm sure if you took most 80's cars to dealers or any garages to get all the work done you could quickly run up huge bills.
On the subject of rip off dizzy caps, I once got asked for about £25 for a cav sri dizzy cap, apparently they're expensive from the supplier. I decided to change the dizzy arm and leave it at that.
edit:
Incidentally, the dizzy cap for an S2 is £15.95 from ECP.

I drove a 1986 928 Auto earlier this year - one of those "dream car" moments and it absolutely lived up to it. I wouldn't necessarily write off the auto unless you really, REALLY like a manual. The auto is a wonderfully relaxing car to drive yet when you poke the fast (rather than loud) pedal, they don't half shift! They really are the sort of car that makes you wonder why people pay so much for much more fragile supercars. So well built that a Volvo suddenly looks quite shonkily put together!

S'funny, got offered an S2 in part ex for the Corvette tonight! Was very tempted.......
As mentioned, the autoboxes in these do actually make a bit more sense - if you're using it everyday, the clutched equivalents can be a bit heavy going and the autos are easier to drive faster, in some respects. Much nicer around town too.
