ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzz SLEEPER. original power x ?? I believe that some of these vans sold for fleet use had a restriction plate between the carburettor and manifold to limit driver exuberance.

Probably about 60hp standard and about 160/180hp when finished, that power with 4.55 ratio diff mean 0 to 60 quite quickly and about 90/100 flat out I should think

My old Astra Autograss car had 40DCOE's and dynoed at 179 bhp at the flywheel ( probably a bit optimistic) but it was 137bhp at the wheels. It was pretty nippy. My Escort has 4.6 diff ratio and a tranx type9, 185x60x13's and that shows 110mph at 6500rpm on a gps speedo (not sure how accurate the speedo is).
What I think I'm saying is this van will go pretty well.

Sorry Jim. I've not got a rev counter on it, one that works anyway. I also have no temperature gauge, oil pressure, non of that nonsense. It's a rally car so I'm usually looking out the screen 😁. By my calcs at 55mph it should be doing 3250rpm. Is that right or am I being to simplistic?
It is noisy, but not the engine, in 4th it's fine (1:1 through the box), but in 5th it howling as straight cut gears, so I always where ear plugs. The Escort doesn't run a red top though, it's got an RS2000 16v on standard injection but it does have quite an inlet roar but not intrusive. The exhaust is a 2 box straight through but is quite quiet.

Just a question.... I have seen that many people using the C20NE, XE etc. engines in RWD cars are using Ford gearboxes. What's the reason behind using them instead of a Carlton or Omega box? The Ford box is smaller than the Vauxhall. It also has a very good gear change. The ratios in the standard Ford box are not ideal as 1st is very low, but gear kits of various ratios are easy to source and fitted in a morning. For about £1k you have a strong performance orientated box that can take up to 250 bhp. Although These days lots of people are going for the RX8 box as it's cheap as the ratios are supposedly quite good.
