Have you noticed the Falcon Barra engine yet for more silly options; the final evolution of your original 6.. With Dohc 24v variable cam timing & optional turbos from recent Australian Falcons. The Maverick having also been a replacement/reskin of the original '60's Falcon. Cheap here unless you want turbos, not that that means anything by the time transport is added. Ford's 6 was always a fairly heavy & long engine. Obviously floors far more important! Definately prefer the simpler styling & relative obscurity of Maverick over Mustang. Would absolutely LOVE a Barra engine in this thing, if the bank balance allowed, that would be my primary choice. But as there is factory support for slipping a 302 in between the rails, I think I will take the easy option on this project... For now.

what sort of output did the I6 200 engine have? i expect in the grand scheme of UK cars still got quite a bit of poke Only around 120bhp out the factory on this model, a fair few have likely fled the stables by now haha

So, had a play down the workshop at the weekend. Rebuilt carb fitted, electronic ignition fitted (although keeping hold of the points as a last resort backup) cleaned all the spark plugs, gapped them up properly and.... SHE RUNS! And runs really nicely too. Super smooth, very happy with that. Put everything to factory specs, timing, idle speed the lot. It seems really quite happy now. So left it there as a job well done for the weekend haha i'm easily pleased. Gave her a good run down some country lanes and she pulls along nicely and happily at 60mph. Next task is to rip the interior out, clean the floors up, replace a couple holes (might replace the whole floor pan) then get it all painted up and underneath sealed. After that I gave a mate of mine some stick about how I was making more progress than him towards getting my car on the road. He has quite a few toys, but my fave of his collection didn't see the road once last year and I have challenged him to get it back on the road by April so we can cruise over to a Bicester Heritage meet together... Here's a pic of his Road Runner with its rather subtle stable mate.

How's about this? not a barra or turbo, but still a 4.0 6cyl with 220hpThat's quite a pair of cars your buddy owns!

That is an interesting motor vehicle, can't say I know much about them, does seem cheap though!

Very cool! I definitely need a bit of old US metal in my life one day, too much watching Roadkill, Hot Rod Garage etc I think... I’ll keep an eye out for this if you make the Sunday Scramble in April

On the way home, we ended up stopping at a services and bumped in to someone that had an even more full on project than us! This Spitfire was pretty much held together with rust, best of luck to them! It's really niggling me, where is that services? I'm sure I've been there!

Been a bit lackluster keeping this up to date, there were quite a few more holes in the floor than advertised, which was a little frustrating as they (seller/importer) had taken some very clever photos of the car on a ramp before I purchased it... Ah well. Nearly all fixed up now and I have gone through the entire car so at least there shouldn't be any more surprises. The floor pans I had ordered, despite being labelled as 1971 Maverick floor pans, turned out to be Mustang floor pans... As apparently no one manufactures Maverick floor pans, but Mustang ones are a 'close fit' yeah.. Good one. Anyway, after much massaging they are in and all buttoned up. One last repair required at the back of the car, which should be easy enough compared to everything else and then it is time for under sealing! The car is all registered now, only took 6 months, would have been much quicker had I done it myself, but now that it is done, I will never need to deal with the guys I bought the car from ever again, frankly that feels pretty good. A few weeks shy of a year from purchase to the car landing and registration being complete. Bunch of cowboys. So, onwards and upwards! Had a mate swing by in his F100, few jobs to do on that too before American Speedfest in two weeks, so will have a play with that soon too! Looking forward to getting some proper road miles put on the Maverick in the coming weeks. Now that spirits are a little higher and the hard work is done I will try and keep the updates coming... Suspension, 5 stud conversion, LSD, wheels, motor swap... Rough plan of things to come.

Not much to report, the sun was shining too brightly at the weekend to get any work done, so a little trip to a beer garden was in order...

Great looking car. Something a bit different too.
Ah. I miss having an old car on the road to pop out in the sun,

Few more weeks on and it's been great run cruising around in the old girl. Put a few hundred miles on her and then... A very unhappy car. Was heading to Dragstalgia at Santa Pod on Friday afternoon, the sun was shining, the car was full of cider life was good. Got stuck in a bit of traffic in Olney (standard Olney) and then stopped at the BP garage to stick some more fuel in. Cracked on an all was well, grinning from ear to ear, windows down and enjoying the gentle cruise to the pod. Then, pulling on to airfield road the old girl starts messing about, it sounded like it had dropped a couple of cylinder. So I jumped out and checked the basics to make sure nothing had fallen off... Nothing obvious, which wasn't confidence inspiring. It still seemed to idle relatively well, but wouldn't rev. So I limped it to the Pod, as mates with tools were there, parked up, cracked a couple of ciders and it became Sundays problem. Might as well enjoy the weekend! On Saturday however, went to go and take a look at the old girl, fired it up to check for vac leaks, have a look at fuel delivery and so on, a few more basics... Well there was nothing obviously wrong again, but now it was running chipper and revved really nicely. Magic. OK, now 100% Sundays problem for the drive home. Sunday came, fired it up to rumble round to the show and shine (lol) not to show it, but to get it closer to the gate for a quick getaway later that day... And... It was running like a bag of spanners again. Very odd. Anyhoo, got stocked up on breakfast and coffee, helped some mates sort their cars as they were racing, got to late morning and I thought I better hit the road, see how far I get, then get recovered if needs be.It's only a 35 min drive back home, so might as well have a crack! After rolling out the show and shine, some hilariously nice cars had parked up around me before I left, the car was running sweet as a nut again. Well strike whilst the iron is hot and I set off. Everything was going fine, taking it super easy so as not to push my luck. Got stuck waiting for about ONE MILLION mopeds to come past that were taking up the entire road, after about 5 minutes I got bored and just started driving at them (they were on my side of the road after all), then went through Olney, no worries there even despite more traffic, then about 2 miles from home, all this nonesense started again... hmmm Very strange, pull over, reverse down the layby a little, then it starts running absolutely fine again, revs really nice and crisp... At this point I'm thinking maybe some dirt in the carb or fuel, maybe the float is sticking and dumping fuel in or something... But as it was running nice again, off we go once more... now about a mile from home, same again... This time I just crack on and limp it home as there was nowhere super sensible to pull over. Good weekend all in really, Dragstalgia is a good crack, lots of drinking and laughs as well as some racing with interesting motors. Phone went flat pretty quick and I wanted to save battery for potential emergency broadcasts so very few pictures, but a friends gallery on Euro Dragster shows what sort of show it was! www.eurodragster.com/santapod/live/2019dragstalgia/pictures/saturday/default.asp

This was the car we were looking after at the weekend: 1965 Nova wagon, LQ4 motor, stroked to 408ci pushing about 600 brake. Lovely bit of kit with a best of 11.1 on the strip. Spontaneous shirt purchases when drunk... They were a lot louder than most of the cars there.

So had a chance to take a look in to the car in more depth now that there is less alcohol involved and this is what I have found so far... Looks like the headgasket has pushed some fluid out, which is less than ideal. Pulled the plugs and 4 & 6 looked a bit nasty and likely explains why it seemed like it was a couple cylinders down at some points... pre ignition or oil fouling? Either way, not amazing. Before pulling the plugs, it was running like junk again, cleaned all the plugs and now it's running sweet again. Leak down tester on the way to see if the head gasket is shot as well as a new gasket set, new water pump and some new temperature gauges (not sure I trust what is on there). It wasn't puking any fluid and didn't seem like it was getting too hot, but the rad hoses were really hard really quickly when running, so it's not happy somewhere. The investigation shall continue!
