Erm, yeah so the gearbox is getting looked at. By looked at, I mean just that, it's pure witchcraft and pixie dust in there. Not a clue how any of it works, but time to learn and get involved! Basically it felt like park was trying to engage when coming to a stop and when putting the gearbox in to park, it didn't hold it anymore... I may have jumped to a few conclusions thinking the parking pawl was the problem, but it seems to be fine... More poking around this weekend.

That’s weird, looks fairly clean in there. The end of the selector bracket looks chewed up?

That’s weird, looks fairly clean in there. The end of the selector bracket looks chewed up? It looked ok, may just be the dodgy photo? It all went back together ok and on the test drive still drives well, but when coming to a stop and then going to pull away again, there is a horrific juddering from the driveline, once it overcomes that it's off again no dramas... Initially thought it was gearbox related, still might be, but I just can't figure out where it's coming from or why it would be happening. Seems ok if you give it a boot full of throttle, it's not engine related, as it revs freely when in neutral and park, idles lovely and seems to run like a champ, just this odd issue when coming to a stop and pulling away again. Hmmmmmm... can't replicate it when on axle stands. So maybe it needs load on it to make it happen. New leaf spring and what not, so I don't think it's bad pinion angle or axle wrap causing it... The hunt continues...

has it got a 2 piece prop, failed centre bearings can do what you describe.

It's a single piece prop, but the UJ looks a bit manky at the back end, so may swap this out as it's a cheap part and easy to do. It has the factory open diff, haven't gone anywhere near this yet, but once again, looks grim so might need looking at too. The (sort of) good news, is you can replicate it every time just driving back and forth in front of the workshop, so easy to test after swapping parts and poking around. Would be great if I can figure out what it is, as it's the only thing that taints driving it currently.

I would say that the sane solution to this would be to fit a T5 and a man peddle.... Might not make the noise go away but would make you feel better inside. (Please note tongue firmly in cheek...) Quick thought - are you sure it is an open diff? Could it be a failed LSD that is making the noise? Probably not but might be worth a check. P.

Perhaps this is the way forwards! When it gets a V8 swap there is a high chance a third pedal will sneak in at the same time... The extra cylinders should help hide the noise too... Seems like a foolproof plan. The diff certainly gives the illusion that it's open by how the wheels rotate in opposite directions when you spin them in the air and it certainly acts like a pirate when you do a burnout with its peg leg. Worth looking at for sure though!

Have you checked the alignment of the propshaft?
I had an issue on my MK2 Jag where the alignment of the propshaft was wrong and it caused a terrible juddering when you pulled away.
It might be worth checking the workshop manual for your car to see if there is any guidance on how it should be setup.

Not yet, as I had convinced myself it was something to do with the gearbox, but certainly going to check this out, cheers!

So, after some more investigations (don't know why I didn't think of this sooner) it seems that when you go to pull away in Drive, you can feel it tighten up and not want to pull itself forwards freely, shift it manually down to 1st and she's mint, no dramas at all. If you are in Drive at a stop, shift to 1st or 2nd, then back to Drive, it's spot on too... So something is making it grumpy when in Drive if you were in Drive as you came to a stop, perhaps it isn't shifting down properly and just has no idea what to do? Certainly something odd going on, possibly vacuum related? The motor has also started stalling a lot at junctions/roundabouts and what not, may be related, may not be. Haven't had a chance to start any logging on the EFI as I've been trying to suss out the mysterious gearbox... Be interesting to see if anyone has any thoughts on this... Pic, just because...

Have you checked your balls?
You need to check they are there.
...
If I recall, there's a few one way check balls in the valve block that can cause some very bizarre behavior in D that you can bypass by selecting 1, certainly to pull away. Get the service manual, pull the valve block and make sure it's 100% what the manual says it should be.

Well the Mav has sat collecting dust for a little while, trying to move house so resisting unloading the parts cannon at it. It has been out for a few short drives and started messing around like nobody's business, running rough, stalling lots and all sorts. Found a little vacuum leak, which was also the same vac line that ran to the gearbox vacuum modulator, so I thought I may be on to a double win with this... Despite already checking this before. Replaced it and the motor runs lovely again, but the gearbox is still operating strangely. Drives really nice once you get moving, just hates pulling away in Drive... Very, very odd. Whilst playing with the EFI I wanted to see if I could run it off a single injector as the EFI system is oversized for my car, I knew this when I bought it.. Unplugged and injector but it was not happy trying to run at all, so knocked that idea on the head and put it back to normal haha had to have a play though and interesting to see how it all goes together.
