All Fiat 126s are pretty pitiful but quite amusing, for very short journeys, at least. I had a 1973 one as my first car, and couldn't wait to get rid of it! It bemuses me why the Polish have such affection for them... Probably because it's the only thing they could affort... it's their 2cv/moggy/metro/corsa I've been in fiats all my life, and i can't even imagine being without one. In my opinion it's the pure basic motoring that attracts...

Yes, but the early ones, at least, were pretty hopeless in winter for instance, with lousy demisting - not much good for Eastern-bloc winters. I remember mine took a good 20 minutes or so to even begin demisting the windscreen in winter, and I had to scrape ice off the inside of it. Then, there was constant rust, etc.

If they’re anything like the fiat 500 you don’t need demisters, you could just turn round in the drivers seat and clear the rear screen.....👍

But he was talking about the front screen. At least there were flip windows in the doors, just like in vw beetles, to help a little bit.

Pah, don't mention those - the hinges were bonded to the quarterlight glass, and they just kept coming unstuck, rendering them unuseable. Oh yes, the headlining on mine came unstuck too. Then, there was the throttle return spring that snapped at 'speed' (such that it could attain, pedal to the metal) along a dual carriageway, resulting in me almost going up the back of a lorry, then having to drive home manually lifting the accelerator pedal via a busy town centre. It certainly tested your driving skills, for sure!

That reminds me of a friend who had a Honda 400/4 which would only run on 2 until it warmed up Usually wasn’t a problem because he’d just leave it idling until the other two cut in Unfortunately one morning he was late, and left the house on two cylinders It wasn’t until he was coming up behind a truck that the other two cut in, leaving him with a desperate throw onto the foot pegs to miss the truck..... Only to find a bus coming the other way He swears he left part of his jacket on both vehicles!

Made me smile, made the car smile, all around joyful I believe you're getting 'smile' and 'psychotic grimace' muddled up!
