Toying with the idea of getting a b series pickup. I would go for a crewcab or a two seater. It has to be rwd and manual. What do they drive like and what are they like for a bit of tail out fun? Also what model is best to get the B2200 or B2000? I'm thinking of maybe even going for a Ford Ranger in rwd flavour. What it the likelihood of me picking one up for less than a grand too? Love to hear opinions from actual owners.
Cheers

We have crew cab 4x4 Ford rangers at work and the back can step out but not by much. They just don’t have the power. The steering is quite numb and we’ve had a few electrical problems with them.

Yeah the Ranger I just a side suggestion I think. I do like the mk1 2 seater options. I'm pretty sure the diesels are quite tuneable too. Mazda is my ideal option though.

I've only had the Ranger 4x4 too, this one It was good too. But there's no point in getting one and thinking it will drive like a car, it won't, at best it will drive like an old Range Rover. However, tail out fun, check, I could do full laps of my nearest roundabout when the bed was empty. As for top speed, I managed 120mph on the E40 autobahn without any drama. In short it was a pretty good truck. As for picking one up for less than £1000, it can be done, but the cheaper it is the more of a project it's likely to be.

My other half has a 55 plate B2500 which is the same as the Ranger of that era which is the model before PistonPoppers above (In fact all Rangers were Mazdas as they were all built by them then Ford stuck their badge on) Doublecab 4x4. HI-LO selectable (in 2L it's RWD and yes you can kick the back end out easier than you'd think, not in the dry though) It has got about 206,000 miles on it, it's off the road at the moment because it's developed a top end knock which could be an injector. Need to sort that. We've been all over in it and it's never missed a beat. Regularly went to the Lake District in it (it's slightly battered appearance does cause the more 'traditional' tourists to move over and let you by, assuming you to be a local!) Chucked bikes on the back and been around places. It was unfazed by Hardknott Pass in the Lakes. Last Christmas spent a week in the Lakes then drove up for a week in Scotland. Drove from Galloway area to York (she's not keen on motorways so I drove) and it was fine averaging 70mph all the way. Strong engine, pulls well, scares town folk, doesn't fit so well in some parking spaces.

Not a Mazda or Ford but have you considered a Chevy S10? I drive a 4.3 v6 version daily and it is awesome! I have owned it two years and it has never got boring or let me down. On the standard 205 width tyres you can easy stick the back end out. The is also 2.2 4 pot versions.

Has to be RWD for me whatever it is. I just love the style of the Mazda. Pauly22 your one is spot on. I would love that or the older version. Is it manual? If i end up looking at a ranger it will have to be the 2 seater mk1 I think. Happy to know they are reliable though.

Would be nice if 5th was a bit longer geared so it wasn’t revving so much at 70. The two seater is good, but it’s a pain if taking tools etc as they have to go up front. The crew cab is still two door but has a couple of small seats in the back would be better, but you loose space in the bed. A lot were used as work vehicles so most will be a bit worn, tidy ones do still make good money. I am tempted too look for the 4x4 one though at some point

For me I prefer the look of the king cab pick up over the single cab. However if you often find yourself carrying 8x4 sheet materials then the single cab is probably better for you. Have you considered an earlier Mazda B2000 pick up?

Of course there are plenty of other trucks available in single cab 2wd format Mitsubishi L200 Toyota HiLux Vauxhall Brava Nissan Navara Tata Loadbeta To name but a few, and if you open up to the idea of a 4x4 then there are many more options.

Yeah has to be rwd. It would just be for a bit of fun and to chuck my bikes on the back of. I also have a couple of sets of really nice wheels for them and I would see what the diff is like and think about welding it.

I think the Ranger uses the same engine as the Mazda Bongo with a slightly different cooling arrangement, they are 2.5 diesel, very nippy, my auto pulled like a train but 22mpg around town 30 on a run

It will come in handy even if you never use it

I really like the look of the king cab over a double cab. Some of the later king cabs have suicide doors at the back. If you're not regularly carrying people but have tools etc it may be a good idea. The double cabs have small beds which defeats the whole purpose of having one imho.

I must admit that the King cab appeals to me too from an aesthetic point of view. I'm not too sure how good they would be for sitting in the back though. Probably ok if youre a child... Or have no legs!
