Hi Duggy there is no swallow tail Mk1 GTI they came out in 1976 and the swallow tail was built in 1974 and 75 only so only Golf, Golf L and Golf LS models available even with drumbrakes. Not strictly true, there are a few very early swallowtail GTI's out there, even in the UK, I believe there is also at least one in the VW museum in Wolfsburg but they are very rare... Swallowtail GTI

Well I do not agree there as this is the prototype with short swallowtails (long version up to Nov 74 and short version from Dec 74 up to March 76) that was displayed on the 1975 IAA Frankfurt car show and the GTI letters are different to the final version VW had 15 prototyps for all tests ( 62000 miles tests etc,)on the production car that was launched in 1976 with NO swallowtail panel as this was deleted in March 1976 and the GTI was launched in June 1976 and the GTI only arrived in the UK as RHD in 1979. regards

There are UK gti's dating back to '76 but these are all lhd, as you say we only got rhd in 79 and even then with the poor brake link set up...

Wow so much left that's not red on this rotenwagen! Great thread. I owned a Mk 1 Golf, fantastic car, the best styled of all the Golf's.
