With all the short runs and idling in the garage the oil is thin and nasty. I'm going to change that.
I checked the wiring and I don't have a fault, the oil pressure switch is DOA
I cranked it over, and it spun over happily. Started it up and there's no knocks or anything nasty (that's a relief).
Can't see anything missing from above, will check oil pan and fluid torus bolts this afternoon with the car jacked up. Clink-paZING likely a stone or other road debris catching the flywheel. I need to get the lower stone guard for it, mine is missing.
For a 5 minute inspection at lunch that's pretty good.

Gave the car an oil change tonight after work. What came out was well beyond needing to be changed. It's flushed out a lot of curse word but also a lot of short runs had it all thin from fuel past the rings. It's a lot more quiet now! That made a huge difference.

Today was busy. I've changed the coolant, it's now 50/50 antifreeze and distilled water, all burped and working nice Heat riser and manifold gaskets fitted New stud at rear of manifold fitted, replaced bolt Oiled air filter and filled dish Replaced fuel lines- tightened pump, found the leak. The steel line to the carb was cracked. New rubber fuel pipe (marine grade)
So, all in all a good day

Always fun to find the fuel gauge sender weeps. A little fuel on a hot day makes a big stink.

Received a new crank vent tube in the mail. It was in good shape, but grubby. In gasoline, in the ultrasonic bath for an hour. Yup. It was quite dirty. Took it back to clean metal. Cleaned and painted the clamps. The rest of it is drying overnight now. I need to make the bracket because it's missing, but that's just a simple piece of bar stock. I'll measure that up once it's all dry and together. Phil

What a rewarding result.
This is exactly why I love the whole thing of polishing a turd and keep buying weird stuff. Maybe one day I will get an Audi TT or something relatively modern to just pretty up.
The results are always going to be rewarding, and as part of a greater game, just awesome because you know it has improved your car.

You won't see it unless the hood is open and you crane your neck down the back with a flashlight. But, it's clean now. Might as well start clean. Phil

Wow! Was that just from the ultrasonic bath and gas? Not 100%. The ultrasonic bath was primarily to get inside and clean up the gauze. It took a lot of the dirt off, but there's 70-odd years of curse word caked on so I finished it up with a steel brush. Phil

Been following this thread for a while in awe of all the little fixes and improvements you have made. Seeing the car out in the wild is fantastic. When I was a kid I used to love these big old 50s American sedans with all the chrome after my uncle brought back some pull back toys for me after going to summer camp over there.
In my eyes this is ultimate cool and has just the right level of patina and attitude. Love it!

It's still got a bit more patina than I'd like! (That is, rust).
I need to get up underneath and scrub at the differential- apparently there's a number on the case that indicates the final drive ratio.
They had about 6 variants, all the way from 3.02:1 to about 4.9:1 and I want to see if there's a lower ratio than what's currently fitted because highway speeds are a push.

I did think it was revving quite high. I doubt it’d have any problem pulling a 3.02:1 diff.

I need to hook up the tach, because I think it sounds faster than it is. Tonight, I rerouted the vacuum and oil gauge pipes because they were in the way of the new tube. I made a little bracket to support them. Fitted the vent tube, made a bracket for the lower section but the metal is too thick. I'll remake it in something thinner. Phil
