More rusty metal tonight. Old dry underseal, hacked at with hammer and chisel. Where the underseal had adhered, the original paint underneath was still in good condition- given that tube there sits directly up above the front wheel, I'm sure surprised how good it still is. Attacked the rest with wire wheels. I like gloss black. It's quite forgiving in some ways. That's gotta dry now. Then I'll pull the motor apart and rewire it, then it's all gotta go back together. Phil It almost looks like you have Chromed it Phil very nice.

Gloss black lacquer-enamel hides a multitude of sins. The other parts didn't come out quite as well because they were really rusty and I didn't have the enthusiasm to do full metalwork prep on them. Phil

I read the first two pages when you put the thread up and then lost it for some reason. I've just caught up over the last week. Great "can do" attitude and love the way everything is repairable. Great car and great thread

Reassembled fan blower unit. Bolted it into the car but it's dark. It works.

Pictures in the sunshine. Front wheel arch- fan intake pipe. Under the car, pipe and repaired duct. The pipe was all bent out of shape so I had to put a jack stand under the pipe and lower the car onto it gently it push it back in line. Now the bracket clamps it correctly. And finally the best picture of the fan you can get, it's tucked away down the back. Phil

I should probably have cleaned it up while it was in bits.
At least it comes apart easily now.

Those skirts hide some sins don't they? Can you get replacement sills still? Outers yes. Not sure if the inner repair sections are available, probably- the central section of the body tub is common to Chevrolet and Pontiac from '49 to '53 so it's common enough. Floor pans are available, which is nice, as are trunk pans. I haven't picked at the trunk pan much but it's all holes along the rear where they cleverly stuffed foam insulation in a trough just before where the water can get in. I do need to invest in a welder, grinding wheels, disc cutter, nibblers etc. Gave it a wash and chamois because the trees think it's autumn and are dropping curse word all over the place. Ready for a drive now. Phil

We have a few weeks of birds flinging poop too. Fledging season that is. I can't park any further forward on the driveway, else the front of the car is under the power wires that run up the street and the car ends up with a line of poo over the hood.

Update time. I had wired the draw-through fuel boost pump up to the starter button, to aid engine starting. This is ok in cold weather but in this warm the car likes to stutter in traffic as the pump draws vapor from the pipe that runs under the engine. It also seems to have trouble keeping up at speed because this on has significantly improved high speed (55-60) running on the highway. Onward and upward. Phil

Last of the good weather for a few days. Went to the drive-in, got a chocolate malt. Despite being a big car, modern pickup trucks and SUV's dwarf the Chieftain...!

I'm thinking about keeping The current setup- each is a backup for the other should one totally fail, and the engine driven pump also has the vacuum pump for the wipers. Phil

Went for a 14-mile round trip this morning, running the pump.
It really does change the car a lot; you don't have to constantly curse word about with the gas pedal to hold speed, and the engine sounds happier, if that makes sense.
It also burns a bit more oil, so the combustion pressures are going to be higher (more torque, a good thing).
I need to set the idle mixture with it running, it's definitely too fat right now.

My dad had an electric one in parallel with the engine mounted one on his scimitar, his aim was to imorove starting but he found it worked well when the engine was running as well (he kept both as he had a distrust of anything electronic).
