I need a cool retro van (I don’t, but I do!) for my business. I had previously looked at Hyundai H100’s as that’s the shape I want. Now spotted this Vauxhall Midi what’s the thoughts on them? I’m thinkinh rot??? 😂

I've not seen one of those for ages, completely slipped off my radar. That could be cool, sorry I can't comment on them, Isuzu engine? I would agree with the rot, if they didn't we would see more of them.

Yeah rust mate, I drove a J reg one in the 90s which was an ex Vauxhall demonstration vehicle, 2 litre Isuzu petrol with column change and an umbrella handbrake and bull bars. Scarily fast and great fun but a bit of a sweat box with it being forward control. You could get it off the clock in 4th (although the clock only went up to 80). Different times and I’m a bit more responsible now, (a bit 😜).

Worked at a Vauxhall dealership that had a 2.4 td as a delivery van, loved borrowing that thing especially with the column change and another that was no slouch :-)

I’m thinking 70’s styling with aggressive stance and slot mags 😎

Engines were Isuzu 'cos the whole thing was a rebadged Isuzu Fargo. Apparently there was an AWD version a bit like a Bishi Delica Eighties-tastic. Not sure 70s styling would work as it's quite futuristic looking for it's age - I'd go JDM Sushi Van or sometihing - loud, bright, Kanji script, Wantanabes, Flares Second Gen was a rebadged Nissan Caravan that weirdly looked older than the mk1

I used to drive one for the Vauxhall garage I worked for. I know it was a petrol one as the other driver used to take great delight in making it backfire ! He stopped after he blew the rear silencer up. It was quite nice to drive although being narrow the middle passenger used to get elbowed a bit when changing gear.

I hired the same vehicle a few times back in the 90s to move my sister in law and to take my mate up to Blackpool. That vehicle still holds the record for the most amount of miles I have driven in one day - 654. I have no idea what the MPG was as a) it was in 1996 and b) my mate picked up all the bills.
It was quick for what it was (2 litre petrol i think) and considering the horrid weather we did not hang about. Still, I was VERY glad to get home...

The only thing good about them, is making them kept me employed for 6 years during the construction industry down turn. A head on crash above 5 MPH will see your lower limbs replaced by them fancy springs disabled athletes have. Give them a wide berth if you value your legs.

Isn't that the same for all Forward Control vans though? Hiace, Caravan, Rascal, Vanette, T2, T25, etc?

I don´t want to praise Volkswagen to the skies, but I´m old enough to remeber a crash test report from 1984, where the vw t25 offered better front crash safety than the japanese stuff. The crush zone should be the same like in a t2 after 1973. Found some (unfortunately very small) pics: In this pic you can see why the vw bus was better (pic low right, those yellow y-shaped reinforcements):

I always enjoyed driving them, pretty nippy from memory! they will rust but no different to any other commercial of the period, many of the parts can be quite hard work to find now so be patient if you get one!
At the end of the day no vehicle from that era is going to have much crash protection!
