Hi all Not been on for a while, but when I need help I know where to come! Gained a Lombardini 6ld360 single cylinder diesel engine, without a starter motor. So I bought one off the usual auction site, but now I still can't get it to start, and I'm not strong enough to pull start it. On reflection I have formed the opinion that it's turning the wrong way. So my question, finally, anyone know which way these engines turn viewed from above? It's a vertical shaft engine. TIA

Clockwise, unless you have a digital clock
They do need to be on full throttle to start, which may help you.

Cheers for that Iain, that was my conclusion, anybody want a cheap 1404 starter? 🙄

Hi, I seem to remember from somewhere that starters for these engines come in two flavours, Clockwise and counter clockwise depending on where the starter is mounted from.

Yeah, I stupidly took a gamble and bought a starter motor on the offchance, fits the engine fine, mind you so does a P38 diesel range rover one, but that also turns the wrong way!

Now, I did think about that, but I'd probably just end up wrecking a new starter motor, so it's probably best to pass it on whilst it still works, bite the bullet and fork out for the right one. I saw that write up too, confused me a bit, but thanks anyway

Sure - see the logic, but seems probable that the differences lie in the brush plate and if there are two very similar motors with opposite rotation then possibly switching the brush plate will have the desired effect.
May be easier just to get another motor of course.....

Thanks for the help, I've got to swap the starter motor on the electronic time bomb (range rover P38) since it keeps sticking so I can try on that one and if it fails, who cares? Cheers all
