sideoilerv8 Why didnt I get the right rings to fit the block? I had ordered the rings from NZ (not much in Oz for the Daimler) before I had the cylinders machine honed. The honing took the dimensions out to max tolerance and still did not quite clean up. I was going to make do until I found the piston grooved also needed to be machined deeper to facilitate the oil rings. At that point I decided to send the rings back and order new oversize pistons and rebore the block. GOLDNRUST I have upgraded my heater - yet to be tested of course but I did the same as you can see here: landieman.com/2020/02/19/heater-strip-down-and-upgrade/ Jehu

Very impressed with the zinc plating. I am tempted to try it but I think I will just blast and paint mine grey. When I first pulled the heads off mine I was baffled by silicon gunk on all the exhaust valve collets. After now hearing a few stories of serious engine smoke I can only imagine that someone had used that as a strategy to try and reduce oil running down the valve guides. I have fitted new valves but not guides and I have not had it machined for valve seals so now I am very nervous that it may be an oil burner.

GNR , are we sill supercharging and megasquirting ? Very much so! But it may be some time... Fiat restoration has jumped it in the queue and a pair of small people are reducing the shed time considerably at the moment.

Well your home zinc plating went much better than mine! Couldn't get mine to work after a fair amount of fettling. Got closer to it, but never ended up with a solid golden sheen, so gave up for the time and took the bits I needed to get done to a platers.
I've still got the kit so plan to have another go when I'm less time constrained. Any tips?

biturbo228 there's a few guys on the mig welding forum that do zinc plating with good results, I would have a poke around on there.

Sorry to hear about your eye. I'm at the same stage with my engine reassembly but could not find a sizing tool so have just tapped into shape using a piece of round wood. I was told others in this part of the world just tap it in with the round of a hammer handle. I wish I had thought of having the housing machined for a modern seal when the block was at the machine shop. Anyway time will tell if it leaks I suppose. It wont be coming out anytime soon!

Yeah, possibly as you guys are now posting more detailed and continued posts about your builds, maybe separate threads would be better and this one can lay dormant till I get chance to do some more with my Daimler Edit: On the piston rings front, my +60 were from David Manners, and were on the larger end of the tolerances stated in the manual, but they were within spec.

when you google information on the Daimler engine their not a lot out their that how i came to this site i would think that keeping all the Daimler info in one place would be beneficial
but if i am causing problems i just stop posting the info i fined out along the way with my build only trying to help other out their builds

You are not causing problems, but your build is interesting in its own right and so a separate thread showing it would also be beneficial. Adding tech info into other threads is still good.

I'm just about to pull the head and pants off my Daimler v8 and am counting on ya - please keep em comin! I think they're just saying to throw them in a separate thread to keep things organised, your project definitely warrants one.
