Have posted this in wanted but also after some advice on what I could be looking for.
Would prefer a truck or wagon - something from the 60s or 70s.
Probably a rolling/running resto rather than a rebuild but due to budget I doubt I will be able to get a finished motor.
Preferably something that is V8, RWD and has enough seats to carry round the family.
Budget is around £3K - does it sound like I will be able to get anything around that or am I way off?
Never owned American and eBay prices are scary/varying to say the least!
Thanks

Trucks are out of your range as prices have jumped quite a bit as lots of people want an old truck now so even projects will start at probably twice your budget. Wagons have also increased a lot for the 60's early 70's ones You may have luck with a later 70's wagon as they were less desirable which means there were not so many brought into the country. 70's cars got smogged down so you will use a lot of fuel without a lot of power which can be chaanged. Try Facebook groups and also watch out if you go to smaller shows you may strike lucky. Hope this helps and you get to hear the V8 rumble

You’re scraping the barrel at 3k, you’ll be looking at pretty undesirable late models for that money of you insist on a v8. Chances of finding anything 60s/70s that isn’t a total basket case are pretty much nil.

I'd like a Rolls Royce Silver Ghost for £500.00 but I'm not going to get one! '60s '70s pickup. You say you need it for your family so you'd need a crew cab / double cab, were they doing any in the '60s & '70s? Almost certainly way out of your budget unless you import something like this yourself; A stationwagon isn't totally impossible but you'd just need to update your expectations to '80s '90s and expect to scour all the ad sites for quite a while before you found something.

Cheers guys, I do Insist on a V8, doesn’t need to be anything amazing but I appreciate what you are all saying about budget vs expectations.
I have scoured for a while and 6K - 10K seems to be the going rate.
Just wasn’t sure whether I was looking at the ad price or the sale price. I know the UK market a lot better than the American market!
Ideally I would like a Chevy Blazer or an old ford. I’ll keep hunting and build up my balance.

Thanks, have taken a look and that is exactly what I am looking for. We all have perceived opinions. I tend to be too honest and critical in my appraisal of even my own stuff. Look at disasterbus review in the for sale ad. Dez is right. Here is a link, may count against me. But at £1.00 to $1.20 now and after transaction costs closer to $1.15 for your pound its going to make a load more sense buying in the UK The cost in time, parts, frustration and the rest when buying something interesting has to be considered. The blazer is 40 years old in January Put the road tax and cheap insurance difference in your pocket for starters (my C230 V6 2.5 liter Mercedes Benz was £400.00 per year) And you are ofsettong the cost of running a V8 on petrol. I bet you my Blazer is cheaper to run for 2000 miles than a Smart. Look at this: Take a look here. www.carsforsale.com/1979-chevrolet-blazer-for-sale-C1068266Cheapest 2wd I can find is $12900 Cheapest 4wd I can find is $3500 So in English money, £3k for the cheap 4wd needing loads of welding, sills etc. plus shipping so you are at £5K to start. Then there is getting it UK registered etc so maybe another £500 if you do it all yourself.

Hi grizz, Thanks for the advice, you’re Blazer looks excellent value for money to me. I just don’t have the budget. Having looked around for a while and checking importing it’s clear my budget is too low. I will re-evaluate and check back if I have more money to play with. I know of an old Land Rover going in my budget I just wanted something with a little more presence and uniqueness to play about with. And thanks for the caddy mention. Brother had a fleetwood for some time but I was really hoping for 4x4 or truck.

Save up and get a better car as starting point or else you own a £3k banger that will rape your wallet for another few thousand ££’

Sometimes I have got lucky, but I knew I was lucky from the moment I saw the car and drove it back. Others, I've thought I was lucky but threw away a ton of cash. I won't say how much as it was terrible! It was less than a car on PCP but in all honesty it would have probably have made more sense to have done the former! I'd probably have more cash now for things like buying a house, which near me is a real struggle. That's the thing. It took me a long time to learn but sometimes you have to spend the cash to make the cash .

The most likely V8 "truck" you will find will be an SUV from the 80s or 90s. Something like a Chevy Tahoe, or a Ford Explorer. Anything resembling a traditional pickup will either be worn out at £3000, or a project with an untested engine.

Thanks guys, not really into the 80s/90s American cars.
Will go look at some options in my price range and make a call.
Have seen a few in West Sussex that look okay, at least if I get something old enough to be MOT free I can get a rolling Resto.
I’m putting money aside to get brakes sorted first

If it’s been sat for 25 years expect everything to need replacing. At the very least it’ll need anything rubber in the brakes and engine bay (fuel lines etc.) and the tyres replacing. Probably dumps a grand on the price straight away.

Imagine leaving a garden set out in your yard since 95 and degeneration that happens.
