I didn’t notice that a set of rough Evo 4 16” rims were quite so wide when I got them to run the winter tyres on the Toyota. When I did twig 8.5” and 205 section tyres I worked out they were at the limit of stretch. Looked fine though. James Got a pic? And I suspect that going 245 down to 235 will be fine. If I can go up from /40 profile it will be good.

Right Retro Riders and other knowledgeable folks. Tire time in the USA and Tyre time in many other parts of the world. After work I quickly got the jack out, used the rattle gun, and removed the original 7J 215/55 16” wheel and tire. Then mocked up the Mercedes Benz 8.5J 245/40 17” wheel and tyre to see how much poked out the side. I did not lower the car on the jack as I just needed to see how wide the wheel looks. From the rear. From the front. Then actually tucked it against the hub properly and took a pic from the top. Last pic. Now I am no police officer, or enforcement person. But to me, despite a bit of wheel sticking out from under then wheel arch, I would like to believe that this would be tolerated Educate me differently. Or show me small plastic arch extensions to bond on. Not sorry for quoting the whole post, pics an all! If that is still with the weight off the suspension, you will most likely find that at normal ride height the wheels and tyres are nicely tucked in the arches I know this, as although the Galaxy is supposedly VW based, the rear suspension is derived from Scorpios but without the rear differential unit! As such, the trailing arm setup has positive camber when dangling compared to about 2.5 degrees at normal height

The car was on the jack, so no weight on the suspension This sounds like you are saying it may tuck that wheel a bit more.

I suspect, as a rule of law, the Police COULD be anal enough to say that it protrudes beyond the arch. It may be worth looking into the old trick that used to be done back in the day ( I remember MK2 Zodiacs having the treatment) where a carefully placed lump of wood and an even more carefully placed jack was used to push the arch out just enough.... I assume the jack was positioned against the inner wheel arch as a platform to push the outer arch out. A slight push and stretch may be possible with that arch? I won’t go mangling, or rolling arches, but get your point. I look at that and think to myself "should be ok as it is". HOWEVER, should you be stopped for whatever reason (might get a numberplate bulb out or something silly), beware the over-zealous traffic cop who might "take a look round", finding fault in his head with everything he can. Most of our traffic boys and girls are marvellous, and won't give it a second glance. A tiny few, however, are not. Personally, I'd be happy with it as it is, but just in case, the SLKs from that era have a little plastic spat that goes on the back of the wheelarch - don't know if it'd be useful for you? And you get an OOOOOOOOHHHHHHH......!!! Now if I got a pair of those mini extensions from a breaker and Sikaflexed them on, potentially job done. I agree, most enforcers would not see that as a problem, and probably not the MOT guy either. Thanks guys, this is where this forum excels, knowledge and a shared passion. Found these....l. Had a Mk1 Ph1 2.3 Gal and absolutely loved it. Bought with 96k on it and set about putting another 80k taking the family all over the UK and into France.
Only issue i had was a relay under the drivers dash that went twice, hazy memory it was relay 30 and was a pita to change!
On PCD, i know my Ph1 was VAG PCD as i bought replacement steels from the local VW dealers at half the Fraud price, but have this memory from Galaxy Forums that the Ph2 changed to Ford PCD. Waiting patiently to see if i was fed duff gen! All the best, Geoff.

Somebody on here sells black arch flares (?) and someone else here used them to mock up (?) a lowering job to a red mk2 suzuki wagon r+ once IIRC. Maybe an option for you too?

If not, I may be selling the Mercedes wheels It doesn't poke out much at all. I would put them on and try it for a bit. They are only £20.00 a set off eBay Bonded, and screw heads glued in place to look mean.l.ll Job done, if needed.

Lets see who pics up what the final hurdle is on these wheels. 2 ems? ETA I was going to go with Slim Shady originally but figured probably be too cryptic. Virtual Beer. So the Ford is 14 x 1.5 lug bolts And Mercedes 12 x 1.5 So a few options of course........ One of them would be drilling the alloys. .

I’ve drilled a couple of sets of Merc alloys ,
All was good , just take your time & use plenty of oil on the drill bit .

So back to the largest and also hopefully last hurdle, bar new tyres for this change to the Galaxy. By now we know 14 x 1.5 lug bolts will not work on 12 x 1.5 holes in the Mercedes Benz Wheels. So at Stupid-0-Clock @johnnybravo and I were chatting about options, Harley of course being her usual self, security and QC. Deep holes.... 13mm at the rear. Front view. 60 degree chamfer down the bottom. Base depth 25mm plus whatever comes up to the surface. So with JB’s advice this was where I took my search. Studs sunk into the Galaxy hubs @14mm with a 12mm shaft. Set with an Allen key and Loctite And at a silly affordable cost....... From the top, holding the wheels in place, will be these open ended nuts. Again, sensible pricing. So the debate is lug bolts through drilled wheels or lug nuts onto new studs from the hubs.?? Happy to hear opinions based in real experience and science. Today included collection of the 5th seat back in Sheppey, and a visit to Darren at the shop and a chat about his laser cut sign business.
