We've all been little boys and girls at some point in our lives, and as an Under 10 growing up in the 70s and 80s you tended to really want a pointy supercar such as a Lamborghini Countach or Ferrari Testarossa. However, us petrolheads tended to be a little bit more sophisticated than the Automotive posters available in Woolworths in the 80s, and it was probably during our teenage years (before we could legally drive) that we started to get more interested in the unusual or slightly bonkers vehicles. If you use your formative teenage years, say 13-16, what did you really lust after? I had 3: 1) This Mustang. It was a 1972 Mach 1 in orange with big chrome Cragar-style wheels. It was brash, loud, sounded like God gargling rocks and I utterly adored it. I first saw it as a 13-year old when it was driving around Clacton, and when I saw it was for sale I desperately tried to convince my Dad to buy it, or even test drive it. Sadly, he didn't share my boundless enthusiasm. It's still on the road, but I somehow doubt it'll be for sale at the 1986 price (whatever that was)... 2) A Mini. Not necessarily THIS Mini, but I wanted a Mini. One with fat 10" wheels, a centre speedo, with a centre exit exhaust, preferably in blue and that smelled of 4* petrol. My first car was a blue R-reg Mini on 10" wheels which I changed for 3 different types of fat ones and had a twin upswept exhaust. It smelled of 4*, especially when the fuel pipe split. I loved it. 3) I also wanted a Porsche 911. With a whaletail, preferably in black. Didn't have to be a Turbo. This was presumably because I wrote to Porsche GB in 1985 asking if they had any info on their latest range and they sent me a massive poster and other stuff. Loved them then, love them now. Can't afford one now any more than when I was 13 What about you?

A Wolesley 6/110. My uncle had an ex police one. Blood red leather and picnic tables. It was epic One of the best looking muscle cars of its generation. I used to dream of owning one. The Mini Cooper S. Always wanted one badly. Adulthood only gave me boggo spec Mini 850s, which were a hoon to drive.

I can clearly remember wanting a TR7/8 hardtop after seeing a very low and wide one at a show as a kid. I thought it was some sort of supercar. Of all the cars I saw at shows the TR7s really stood out to me. Other than that it would have been Clelands Cavalier.

Same as now, I pretty much wanted all the cars but I really really wanted Sierra Sapphire Cosworth and/or Escort Cosworth. Also Mercedes 190 Cosworth (still want one)
Also, a mk5 Escort Van with a full Cosworth swap & massive stereo - painted orange, naturally.
Funny thing is, I'm not really a Ford person (Despite just buying one lol)
Also, a Mini - I did get one when I was 14 - It was going to be on 12" 4 spoke Revs (black centres/polished lips) yellow with black roof/stripes/1275 decal stripe on doors/big arches. Reality was, it was a £50 mini that didnt run & had more rust than steel. So that got canned (most likely was cans at some point)
Pre-teen: A-team van (still want) Purple Capri Bandits firebird (still want but it would have to be pro touring spec lol)

Daimler DS420 hearse, specifically the earlier chrome bumper rather than the later plastic bumper type. I'd still like one of these, they can still be had for not too much and have the benefit of not suffering from wedding car rot-and-wob. 1959 Cadillac Coupe de Ville. Fins, that's the main thing here, that and how ridiculous the rest of it is. Now, I'm not as crazy about them as I was, and there's certainly far more interesting cars I could have for the same money that would satisfy both the ostentatious styling and fins quota of the '59. Had to be red, had to be a two door hardtop, and had to have whitewalls, just like this one. FSO Polonez. A neighbour had one, the same neighbour that got me wanting a Princess years ago, not because the car was particularly good, but because it was so unlike anything else I'd ever seen. Riley RME, specifically in black over burgundy. Knowing what I know now as an adult compared to what I knew then as a teenager I'd still quite like one, I've just got more realistic expectations of what sort of a car it is. 1964 VW Beetle. What I wanted and what I could find were two different things. I wanted to build or buy a 1964 cal look Beetle, but I couldn't afford that even in the '90s so instead I was looking at '72 onwards and every single one I went to see was either rotten (thanks for the tips on where to look for rot, Volksworld magazine!), owned by people who wanted to sell right up until you pulled some money out of your pocket, or both. Honestly, trying to buy a Beetle as a teenager put me off Beetle ownership for a long time and now they're all far too expensive for what you get, I'd rather spend my hard earned on an Imp. VW Buggy. My back-up to the Beetle plan was to acquire a kit car buggy of some variety. What I learned about those is that the ones that were for sale were even worse than the Beetles I was looking at, even with inexperienced eyes I could see the bodge and danger so I dread to think what they'd look like to me now. I knew some good buggy builds must be out there but they seemed to be the ones people didn't want to sell. Whatever type I got it had to have metalflake. Last, but by all means not least, the Mk3 Ford Capri. I came so close to getting one of these as my first car but again it was rot that was the problem. Capris weren't worth that much in the '90s, and the 1.6 Lasers I was interested in did fit into my budget easily enough, I just didn't have the means to repair rot and, given the other costs a new driver has to consider, there wasn't a budget for paying someone else. Perhaps unusually, it wasn't the tv that made me want a Capri, it was seeing a few on the road and just really liking how they look. I fancied either a pale metallic green one, or one in that odd dark turquoise metallic, tartan seats, and four spoke alloys.

As mentioned previously, I used to walk past a Dutton Phaeton on the way home from school... Wrong pic, sorry! It was orange, never saw it move, and my mates took the P and called it a Dutton Phutton or Dutton Futon...

Even before being a teenager – I had a Matchbox Lotus 7 . . wore the paint off it playing with it. Age 19, I built a T&J Locust, a Lotus 7 lookalike, moved onto a Westfield a couple years later and then built a Caterham 19 yrs ago which I still have.
Lancia Stratos . . . bought, improved and put through SVA a replica in 2000 – sold it after a year as I simply didn’t use it enough.
Lancia Delta integrale – saw the rally cars when marshalling as a teenager – saw the odd road car – professed admiration to a lady driver off one when she filled up at the motorway service area I was working as a cashier . . . now owned one for 25 yrs plus – or rather two – a 16V for 8 yrs and my evo1 ever since. 100,000 in each. Evo 1 currently sat in my garage waiting for salt-free roads. Used it as an everyday car until a few years ago and can’t part with it . . .
Dodge Charger – Saturday afternoons . . . Dukes of Hazzard on TV . . . bought a Dodge Challenger in Houston a year and half ago As the Charger is now a saloon, the Challenger looks more like a proper Charger than the a 60’s Challenger.
Don’t reckon I’ve done too bad in fulfilling teenage dreams Other than no meeting the driver of that white Jeep in the Dukes of Hazzard

This exact car...it's crazy to me that a youtube video can be 11 years old and I saw it when it was fresh
I went on to own a plethora of mk2 golfs/jettas and still need to scratch the mk1 itch properly.

It was orange, never saw it move, and my mates took the P and called it a Dutton Phutton or Dutton Futon... My Brother built one & was in the orange you suggest. His Mrs had a totally rotten Mk1 Escort estate, so he set about looking for a reasonably cheap kit car with Escort running gear & the Dutton fitted the bill. Quite good fun as I recall
