Mk2 sons capri has an interesting ‘repair’. Someone has obviously stripped one of the two threads which mount the brake calliper to the strut. They have then redrilled and retapped the thread to a larger size. Problem - whichever muppets did this didn’t take into consideration the size of the bolt hole on the calliper, and now the thread size is too big for the bolt to fit through the caliper lug! 🙄 Mk3 capri struts are becoming difficult to find, and he only wants the os ( drivers) strut body, he already has coil over kits, new inserts, 4 pot callipers etc Anyone know what size thread a capri caliper bolt is? I’m thinking either a helicoil with the correct thread if we can find one, or have the hole welded up and redrilled and retapped to the correct size Tia

For a single hole it'll probably cheapest to take it to a local engineering firm and get them to either
a) Fit a 'Bigsert'. Same as a Timesert but bigger O.D (+4mm instead of +2mm)
B) Get them to double stack Timeserts in the hole if they don't have a Bigsert.

I was about to say why not buy one and do it yourself until I Googled the price for a BigSert.

There is a kit listed on eBay for repairing just this, but it works on the same principle as a wheel stud, and the thread looks a bit coarse from the pics Like you say ChasR, it’s expensive for just one thread Unfortunately since were on self-isolation it’ll probably just have to wait until afterwards, I do have a guy locally who could do it, probably weld up and redrill Thanks for assistance

I'm sure from memory the thread is 7/16 UNF.

You could make a stepped stud to fit both the 'new' thread in the strut(loctiting it in would be sensible) and secure the caliper with a nut of the original thread size. Simple lathe job.
A thorough inspection of the rest of the car for other bodgery is worth considering....

Thanks guys, the car is actually in 1000 pieces at the moment, so we’re aware of the overall condition. But then what do you expect with a £500 rolling shell? Plenty of welding already done, plenty more to do, and lots more money to spend yet Ah least the powerplant is nearly built, cosworth v6, but bits aren’t exactly cheap for them eithet

Can you not drill the hole in caliper to a larger diameter and just use bolt to match the new thread in the strut?

Unfortunately not, because the caliper has to be slotted over the disc, and if there’s s permanent stud in the housing it won’t all go together with the disc in place, and you can’t fit the disc afterwards because the caliper is in the way, catch 22 kevins I did consider that, but they’re brand new 4 pots and I can’t bring myself to drill it out......🙄

I thought they (CapriSport) used adaptor plates to do the conversion however.

Thanks ChasR, but it’s just the one bolt that’s been done 🙄
