I went to the post office with the V5 for my 1979 bike last week, they taxed it for free and sent off the V5 for me. The lady said it would take about 6 weeks to get the document back. No forms to fill in and taxed for free immediately. Its the first vehicle where I've changed the class and put it on the road and it was easy. ahh man!! I want that haha My guy just wrote Historic on the V5 and sent it away. I guess I could maybe do it online now? but ill probably have to pay.

The PO should have taxed it there and then (that’s how you can use it straight away) - I presumed you wanted to keep it SORNed at the time? A lot of PO Counter staff have no idea when it comes to Historic Class VED change.

Hi folks, I’ve got a 79 vw camper and just found this thread about getting registered as Historic.
Normally you can apply at a post office if your registration document shows the vehicle was registered before 1980, but mine has a date of 2002 on it since that’s when it was imported, so we’re back to the manufactured date of Feb 79, which I can prove from a certificate from VW. The post office wouldn’t accept this and told me to contact DVLA which I did in early March. I spoke on the phone and they told me to post the documents to them, which I did by recorded delivery, and they were received and signed for on 11 th March.
Since then we’ve had Lockdown and I’ve had nothing from them in 3 months, apart from an automated reminder to renew the tax at full rate or SORN it. I can’t phone or email them. I’d like to think it’s in the system and they’ll send me notification soon and that I can drive it whilst I’m waiting, but I’m not greatly confident of this.
Is anybody else in this position?

If you don’t NEED to use the van, SORN it. If you do need to use it, I’d try phoning DVLA first.

Trouble is the web site says email and phone services are discontinued for non essential workers. This is probably about as low priority as it gets for them right now.

Same sort of position. I've got an exempt car which I've recently purchased, so a new owner. It has a 1990s log book so I couldn't "tax" it at the post office as the V5 didnt have a barcode and after subsequently trying a manuall entry it spat out a print out to ring DVLA. I've now sent off all the documentation to DVLA. What's the score with putting it on the road?

ive done this recently you need to fill out a v70 link here assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/845575/application-to-change-vehicle-tax-v70.pdfsend to dvla Swansea sa99 1bf not 1dd include your filled out v62 or logbook with it and include a letter with as much evidence you have for the taxation change and ask them to forward the v62 or logbook book on to the relevant department once taxation is changed i think they can tax it while there doing it but i sorned mine. Mine was a motorbike that hasn't been on the road since 1988 and i had no paper work but was on there system so had it changed to historic tax. i had a letter about 6 weeks later saying they had changed it and forwarded the V62 on and would have logbook in 5 days which i did. I thought this was very fast considering whats its like at the moment i had to wait 7 months for a name change on one this year

Or follow the the info in the above post.

I did rather cheekily put the MoT exemption paperwork along with a tax application all in the same envelope. Here's hoping for the best.

So I've checked and it's now taxed but not showing if a new V5c has been issued. Another update, I also received the old(90s) log book in the post with the MoT exempt paperwork and a letter to say that my log book was being dealt with and would be with me shortly.
