This was my daily driver when I was 20. Bought (for the first time) when I was 19. Not long afterwards, I bought this as a daily instead, and relegated the hatch to a lock-up so I could restore it.

Lotta cool cars in here for a 20 year old to own! I spent most of my 20th year with 2 wheeled transport only. But then with another winter of motorcycling approaching, I caved and got myself a licence to drive one of those 4 wheeled tin cans, that I definitely had no interest in, and would always just be a tool to me... Ah the innocence of youth! The mighty Skoda Felicia 1.3, nicknamed Norman, was my first car. Purchased pretty much based purely on cheap insurance premiums. Looking back the Felicia, as the first car since Skoda was bought by VW, was an odd mix of 'proper' Skoda and Mk3 golf. I had some interesting driving experiences, some over exuberance of youth, but thankfully nothing that ending in a crash!

The mini was my first car at 18 and my first foray into modifying/bodging/blowing up engines and the MR2 set me on a path of modified Japanese imports that I've rarely veered from in the 17 years and dozens of cars since. It was also one of the only imported MK1 tin tops in the country at the time. They were both rusty sheds but I regret getting rid of both massively.

I took my Beetle off the road a few months before turning 20, so I'd have been driving: A ropey VW van (period photo)... It doesn't look too much different 11 years onward from that, although the tide-mark has gone up a little...

My first car was an Austin Mini 850 Mk2. On my 19th birthday (in 1985) I traded it in for a factory 1098 powered Mini Clubman. Later that year I also bought a Phase 1 Standard Vanguard which I still have although it hasn't been driven since the '80s.

This was my first car 15 years ago, when I was 20 and started my first fulltime job. I still own it. Have driven it less then a third of the time I've owned it..

2011, £300, covered in dog hair inside and out, absolutely 100% a massive turd but it worked flawlessly. I gave it to my brother after putting a years MOT on it and he cut it up into lots of little chunks for some scrap man to come and get. I spent more than it was worth on brake pads and new calipers. This ladies and gentlemen is what freedom looks like. (my insurance was £2500 or so, so I didn't want to buy a better car and did I need to?)

aged 20, which was back in 1991 I think I would have had a 1.3 Talbot Horizon LS, or possibly a 2.0 Toyota Hiace van which used just as much oil as fuel, and was amazingly rotten, thankfully the local boy racer lost control of his XR3i outside my house and crashed into my van, writing it off, I was delighted!

I had one of these, identical to the one on the picture except for it being red/maroon in colour. A 1973 Saab 99L I still have the sellers receipt for it, I paid £275. That is curse word all money now but, back in 85, I was only earning £70 a week. I bought it to replace my first car, a 71 Hillman Hunter GT. The Saab was like a space ship in comparison, years ahead of its time.

My vehicles in 1999, aged 20... The Vespa was in too good condition I was too scared to take it out to practice on it so it just gathered dust. The Dolomite was in too bad condition (Combined with my salary at the time) for me to be able to afford to get people to fix it every time it broke and I didn’t have the knowledge or internet to be able to teach myself how to fix it.

Blimey! That was a while ago... I'm pretty sure I had at least one (if not more) sunburst red XR3s, and a blue Triumph Dolomite 1850HL. I do know they all cost more to insure than they did to buy! I remember the Dolly causing all sorts of upsets, as it looked like a grandad car but was actually pretty nippy (for the time). The XRs always attracted attention, which I suppose is what you want at 20. Not the actual cars, but the right colours:

My first car, when I was 17, which I had for about 5/6 years. Did two European tours and also had it when studying at Leicester Poly. It never really missed a beat but ended up left in a car park when I could no longer insure/tax it and I assume it was towed and scrapped when it disappeared. I had previously been done for no tax/insurance with it parked up on this road. In the background, right down the road, you can just make out my red and white Bedford CA Martin Walters Dormobile. Happy days.
