How hard is it these days? last time i did it was a few years ago when everyone was panicking about needing engineers reports, I fitted a 1400k in a Riley Elf and just sent a letter from my mates garage along with log book stating engine change details cc and fuel type and something about it been fitted to a good standard and it came back O.K.
Is it still the same process or has it got more complicated?
Cheers

If it is registered historic they should just change it, anything else they demand a letterhead report written in blood from somebody other than yourself or the log book of the donor vehicle.

Yep, receipt for engine and engineers report translates to “letter to DVLA knocked up in MSWord”. I went from a 1600 CVH to 1300 CVH on a car I built for someone fairly recently and heard all kinds of horror stories about going down a VED bracket. Took ages and I eventually phoned up fearing the worst - turns out the desk officer was off sick and it was in her in-tray, got the new V5C the same week.

Historic vehicles tax class, no proof needed for engine changes. PLG tax class you need proof/documentation.
Really is that simple.
Oh yea don't forget DVLA are not all working at the moment, so you might want to leave a few weeks.

I did this a few years ago, got a chartered engineer to write a report , they wouldn't accept that, eventually got a letter from the MOT station which they accepted as fine though.
Interesting about historic, I need to get the minor changed back to 1098 (it currently says 948) but after the messing around last time have been putting it off, hopefully should be easier then.

Just changed engine number on our 'historic' Land Rover by filling in new number (interestingly old number was wrong anyway - looks like a PO had put down a head casting number...) and sending it off. Back within 2 weeks all sorted. James

So if I'm reading the above correctly, it's easier to change the engine on the v5c if it's registered as a historic? I've not got mine updated yet as I read about needing proof but don't have a v5c from the donor vehicle as it was an offroader, so if I can do it without needing v5c if it's historic then I'll just wait a few months when I can register historic

Its an arrangement that was co ordinated several years ago by the FBHVC, it'll be on their website somewhere in the newsletters. Unfortunately I cant remember the date when it was arranged. I've done a few historic vehicle CC changes over the years and one recently with no proof as have a few of my friends, so it must be still be standing.

Yep I'd change over to historic first wait a month or two then change the engine number and cc. Historic change over is April I think for cars that are over 40 on the 1st Jan. James

As above arranged by FHVBC quite afew years ago now. Its worth including a polite note pointing out its Historic and you understand no further proof is required . It's not unusual to get a request for additional paperwork which is NOT required in Historic.

I've a car that I'm building, it was registered in 1972 as a "vehicle constructed from not entirely new components", or something similar? Basically it's a kit car & registered on a "K" plate. The logbook said that it was 997cc, it actually had a 1300cc Ford crossflow fitted, I've now fitted a 3590cc Jaguar AJ6 engine, thought it made cause an issue with such a large increase, but no problem at all, logbook came straight back!

Mine 1994 unfortunately but you'd think they would be happy to get more tax money 🤣
I'll leave it til it goes for MOT and see if they will do me a letter 👍
