After many years laid ignored in the garage I'm finally in a position to invest the time/money in the cortina. Looking at the strut tops there appears 3 layers...which I assume are Lower : Top Mount Under Wing Middle: Original Inner Wing Upper : Reinforcement or Repair Section Question is whether the 3rd layer on top is 'standard'and if I'm repairing the whole inner wing are the 3 layers correct or good practice? Suspect when I cut off the reinforcement on top its going to highlight a load of rot and was actually welded over it as a repair?

Hi, Looking at the pic, the top layer is an aftermarket repair panel (I bet its not welded along the wing mounting, tut tut). the next layer is the original inner wing panel, which could well be rusted to some degree. The bottom thicker layer is the turret under the inner wing, that may or may not be rusted.

IIRC some models had an extra reinforcement panel, like the export cars. What model mk2 is it?
EDIT - wish my strut tops looked that solid! 😳

I bet its not welded along the wing mounting, tut tut Colin And you'd be right, hammered flush then 'sort' of seam sealed. Guess I'm cutting it back and see what its hiding.....

Having looked again, as Colin says these do look like cover plates, there’s 2 types available, short, which is just the strut top, and long, which goes back around the bonnet hinge area Start chopping and put up what you find 😀 Edit- beat me to it!

That's brilliant, the rot I can see around the A pillar looks pretty similar as well so that is fantastic reference.

That’s definitely a repair panel over rust. There are normally 2 layers on a mk2 but 16E, Lotus and many export models had a 3rd reinforcement panel spot welded over the strut tower the goes down the side of the inner wing by about 100mm. If your on Face Book join the mk2 owner’s groups and ask on there as you can usually get the repair panels second hand for about £30 each. Your innerwings do look good and I bet you’ll only need very localised repairs once you remove the repair plates. The thicker under wing panel is a lot more expensive but I doubt yours will need replacing

Thanks to all for the feedback, it confirmed that the "third" layer is a overlaid repair piece(although there are some instances where it would have been a reinforcement). Now sucking it up and ordering the panels/pieces I need beyond those I already have...
@grumpynorthener read the Corsair thread, whose copper primer do you use? Never seen that before as never got on that well with weld thru primers in the past. Many thanks in advance.
