I thought I would ask about ultra sonic cleaners. Does anyone have one?? Any suggestions on one to buy? I am looking for one large enough to fit a webber carb into. Are they worth buying for home use?? Any suggestions for what to add to the water??? Thanks for looking...

I have a 4l one, had it for about 10 years now and regularly use it for carbs (Weber DGV/ DCD sized), throttle bodies and injectors etc. It's worth taking carbs somewhat apart anyway before putting them into the tank, so you don't need huge one if you're OK with doing the carb body and top separately. Prices also seem to rise exponentially with size... I use a generic carb cleaning solution I buy off eBay. It doesn't seem to matter much which one you use, just make sure it's something that isn't corrosive (some swear by Fairy washing up liquid). When I only have a few small parts I put the solution in a glass lab measuring beaker and fill the rest of the tank with plain water. It's worth using distilled water if you want literally "spotless" parts, a condenser tumble dryer is a good source or you can just buy it. Remember that an ultrasonic cleaner is not a magic cleaner, it makes sense to pre-clean (especially degrease) parts before you put them in the tank.

I was talking to someone local about ultrasonic cleaning my carbs, and he mentioned that it wouldn't remove petrol stains. Would you agree with that melle? I thought about buying one (I'd always rather be able to do stuff myself) but as that's the biggest problem with my carbs it seemed a waste. He was talking about doing the ultrasonic clean, then sending any parts that were still badly stained for vapour blasting.

Yes, I agree with that droopsnoot. Ultrasonic cleaners are very good at removing scale, not so much grease and stains. Blasting can indeed remove stains, but if you want a shiny carb I wouldn't blast it as that results in a dull surface. I never bother blasting carbs any more unless they look very bad; it's too much work for very little gain if you ask me.

Thanks, that was the other issue. I spoke to a local firm that does blasting, and asked how long their demo carbs (which looked lovely) had been done, which was apparently a couple of years. But they're dragged around to car shows in a box, not in use in an engine bay with heat and oil vapour and stuff. I did talk to someone at the NEC who had some kind of process that looked good - they did the blast first, then something else to make it look better. I forget what the process was, now, and it probably still has the issue that it won't last all that long. I'd like my engine bay to look better, but they're Dellortos with lots of fiddly little corners, and I don't want to end up having to clean them all the time.
