As a spare time project I am seeing if I can find my old car. To give me a fighting chance, it would massively help if anyone who owned or worked in a scrap yard in the early to mid 2000's would be able to shed some light on how they worked in general so I can get a feeling of my chances of finding the car and various options of what might have happened to it depending on how things were done.
Any help and insight from experience would be very much appreciated. Either on this thread or message.
The sort of questions I am wondering are:
If the yard had a deal with an insurance company, were they required / forced to buy the insurance company's salvage whether they wanted it or not?
Did they have to buy the vehicle from the insurance straight away or was there some other payment plan?
Did the insurance company have stipulations in place about what could be done with vehicles or did they just want the cash and not care?
Would it be normal for a vehicle to sit in a breakers yard for more than 6 months?
Was paperwork always religiously done properly?
Would it ever be possible that an accident damaged car might be sold on as is either to another breaker or trusted punter as a breaker?
Would a breaker ever just chuck a whole complete vehicle in the crusher because they did not have the space or time to dismantle it properly?
Answers to any of these would help a lot in my trying to get a feeling of what might have happened to it so I can focus my search energies in the right direction.

Have you checked the DVLA tax and MOT records, this should give you an idea of whether it was ever back on the road after you got rid of it and I think even tells you when the last log book was issued.
Unless it was something special if it went for scrap it was almost certainly parted out and/or crushed.

I never worked in one but sold tools for a living so often dealt with them from 89-about 2005 always had great laugh with them, I still pop in to two of them occasionally. I have seen them drive in petrol tank punctured and crushed immediately as its worth more as scrap than its parts it all depends on the price of scrap. Documents, payments etc are well and truly tracked not so much back then Some vehicles sit around either because access is bad and too many others in the way or they are higher value but take longer to sell. Even Certificate of destruction vehicles can be sold but sold with out a certain component, motorbikes they cut 12" out if the frame and keep it so you couldn't just weld it back in and put it on the road I would look to the DVLA and owners club on line and Face book

Did the insurance company have stipulations in place about what could be done with vehicles or did they just want the cash and not care? thats down to the categorization process. my report aswell as a possible bodyshop report determined what they went as, cat a,b,c,d or x at that time. a and b were total loss, flood, fire, and biohazard. c was damaged beyond economic repair but allowed to be repaired and put back on road after a viv test. d was repair no viv but logged on database. x was nothing. fix and go. had a mk3 cavalier with 11 months mot come in due to the door being bent. cat x, we bent door back to shape and sold.Would it be normal for a vehicle to sit in a breakers yard for more than 6 months? had a rx7 sit for 4 years due to the owner fighting the insurer on value. had some sit 1 year others release in a week. when processed and put into the stripping area, if it was a rare car or newer, it got kept as long as possible. if it was your average escort pop plus it was stripped and bailed in a week or 2.Was paperwork always religiously done properly? yes. we got audited and discrepances were not allowed. Would it ever be possible that an accident damaged car might be sold on as is either to another breaker or trusted punter as a breaker? yes, we transfered some stock around to specialist breakers, i remember sending 3 new minis and 2 m3 coupes to a bmw specialist wreckers.Would a breaker ever just chuck a whole complete vehicle in the crusher because they did not have the space or time to dismantle it properly? we have crushed complete cars 4 times during my time. one was a multiple fatality in a espace. kids seats etc. you can work that one out. the others were 3 new unreg bmw cpoupes that got damaged in transit. flattened the roofs and once bmw left the site stripped em bare.....
