R170 Mercedes SLKs are as cheap now as they'll ever be. Some of them are utter rotboxes, but find one that's been rustproofed well and you'll get a fun 2-seat convertible / coupe with a decent turn of speed and they're surprisingly refined. The rot is mainly confined to the rear arches and the front wings, but the engine is bulletproof provided it's well serviced. The roof may terrify people but there's a big following and the technical back up is easily available. Just part-exed my 52-plate - I paid £1200 for it last year.

I reckon a Mk1 SEAT Leon should be on this list. The 20V Cupra used to be a real tuner car (has that 1.8 turbo engine as in loads of VWs and Audis), and there are a few mega miles examples around for under a grand, or nice ones for double that. I was looking at RX8s earlier this year. How difficult is it to get parts to rebuild the engines? Given you can get a rebuild (with a warranty) from a specialist for a couple of grand, doing it myself would probably be a false economy, but... IIRC, a 20vt swap into an RX8 has been done, two birds with one stone!

My favourite. I really ought to buy one while they're cheap. These and the Renault 19 cabriolet too I think

I paid 80 for my 1999 Ford Cougar, from my tame mechanic after it failed its MOT on a tyre, brake discs and a 50p sized sill hole. Think it cost me 150 or so to get it tested, and even being the looked down on Zetec, it wasnt slow, fairly comfy and all in a nice drive, I only sold it as the boot was curse word for a dog. Struggled to get 350 for it with 8 months ticket, and by Cougar standards it was a clean one. I think they'll start to appreciate soon as the banger boys are rinsing through the grotty ones.

The cars the OP Listed id be more going towards the Subarus only because I've never owned one and to try something new. the estate imprezza is sadly a 1.6 which in my eyes isnt desirable. no idea how easy it is to swap a good engine in.
What is the Subaru you have?

Pretty comprehensive list already posted. I think BMW'S from that era will continue to rise, partly due to drift tax. I don't know if the C70 coupe will gain much value but it is definitely under appreciated. One of the best stereo systems you could get at the time, and T5 engines. I will cheekily add that mine is for sale

I’ve always liked those RX8s but everything I’ve ever heard or read about them suggests their thirst - speed ratio is comparable with the late Ivy Tilsley?

I'll have to add to this later as I have an impatient Beagle at me currently!
The late 90s to 00s in my eyes is a great age of car.
I forgot about the 306 drop tops ; they're a great looking car. If there is a future classic in that list, I suspect it's the R107 SLK. That very much set the trend for drop tops after it and looked great at the time. I know of a number of people who love them. Find a non-rotten one however is hard.
As for saying they never will be, people once said the same about W124s and R129s.

The SLK and MGF got me thinking about another convertible which has been underrated for years; the Toyota MR2 Mk3/ MR2 Roadster/ MR-S whichever you want to call it Seen as a bit tame compared to the outgoing turbo MR2, these seem to be getting a bit of a following online now as being quite a capable little sports car, lightweight with tuning options for either turbo'ing the standard 140bhp 1ZZ engine, swapping in the 190bhp 2ZZ engine from the Corolla/Celica T Sports, or even fitting the K20 engine from Honda Civic Type R's et al. Bit difficult to get one for under £1k but they are out there, this one looks tidy www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TOYOTA-MR2-1-8-VVT-I-CONVERTIBLE-MOT-HISTORY/274345283439?hash=item3fe040cf6f:g:LuAAAOSw205eoWCCAnd an example of what can be done with them courtesy of Techno Pro Spirit in Japan, regularly puching above its weight on the Gunma cycle course/Touge

The only thing to watch for with MR2 Roadsters is burning oil really (many had new engines under warranty for oil control ring failure) but if you get one that's not burning oil it'll probably be fine.
I've had two, brilliant cars. Doesn't rust like an MX5, better driving position if you're tall (IMO anyway), and definitely better in the snow!
I daily'd mine for a total of about five years. Just brilliant. Pretty much 90% of my VX220, at about 90% discount!
If wifey hadn't lost her licence (due to illness) I'd still be in one now. I'll hopefully be back to one when she can drive again (unless something else interesting comes along).
Also, surprisingly good for putting in a good stereo! Easy to run new wires into doors, comes apart easy, and a surprising amount of space under the dash for subwooferage!

That 1989 Audi 100 on the previous page has been for sale for most of this year and still hasn't sold.
Hate to say it guys, but outside of this forum Joe Public doesn't have too much interest in this era of cars :-(
I'd add Mk4 Golfs on to this list as there's some chippable options there.

Sorry for coming back to this thread so late, busy few weeks at RR HQ! I think coupes would be a good thing to look out for, the 90s was almost the decade of the coupe and now that they're a bit out of fashion, and many were overlooked for being front wheel drive and not overly dynamic, there should be some bargains to be had. This comment and all the 406's got me thinking about car styles that have sort of disappeared. We seem in the modern age to have less large coupes. Arguably I guess the retractable hardtops have taken some of that on, but the 90's did seem a time where a Honda Legend Coupe, a CL Merc or a 406 made sense as a car. There must be some more out there I've forgotten existed. One of the things that has also come up in a similar way recently is the death of the luxury estate car. Once upon a time you could buy a fast and luxurious estate car fairly easily (and somewhat less luxurious but still fast estate car), now days you are basically down to Mercedes, Volvo (if they decide to do an R version) and BMW (but it seems most are diesel now). I guess most companies moved in to the SUV market instead and estates are a little less popular. Talking of which, has anyone seen a Citroen XM Estate for sale recently? I kinda love them in a ridiculous spaceship kind of way.

I suppose I can say it now as I don't work there anymore but sales for the estate version of the Jaguar XF (reasonably fast and luxurious) have always been pretty dismal. Not that its a bad car particularly, but market trends have definitely moved towards SUVs One seemingly cheap XM estate about currently www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C1222878But before I'd even got to that, this was on the home page... www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C1238151Lots of potential..

The Prelude reminds me actually, thinking again of unloved 90s coupes, there were two offerings from Mitsubishi that never got the same attention as their competitors. Firstly the FTO, another case of "ew front wheel drive" and "ew (mostly) auto", like the Prelude they seemed to suffer from some questionable bodykit and wheel choices in period, but are quite rare and cheap now Not much info on this one, but a rare manual and seemingly with MOT for only £700. Hardly concours, but a base to build on? www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mitsubishi-Fto-manual-with-rally-art-set-up/324202808140?hash=item4b7bfe434c:g:cfAAAOSwjsxe6743Good looking car with the right mods The other would be the GTO or 3000GT, always seen as the heavy one when compared to the RX-7, Skyline GTR, Supra, NSX etc. they have always lagged behind in price. Some turbo manual cars are starting to command strong prices but nothing compared to a TT Supra or GTR, the cheapest example I could find on a quick ebay search was this no reserve auction car, no MOT but under a grand at the time of writing www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mitsubishi-Gto-No-reserve/193526163127?hash=item2d0f0ee6b7:g:SG8AAOSwjWRe7NkZ
