VW Mk.1 GOLF CLIPPER KARMANN CABRIO, 1991, 67k miles, Auto, Year’s MOT.
Bought on the ‘spur of the moment’ a month ago from a car dealer friend of mine, who took it in part-exchange.
I’d had one similar, but not in as good condition, many years ago and bought this as I love old Golfs, and thought the wife would like it and that it would be a cool toy for the summer. It is undoubtedly a cool summer toy and turns heads everywhere. The wife, however, isn’t keen on the lack of power steering (she’s got too used to modern cars!).
What I should have bought was a van or pick-up truck, as we’re currently fully restoring an old house and my lovely VW T4 camper is getting wrecked lugging cement, bricks and building materials around. There is still months of building work ahead of us with the house project so the sensible thing is to sell the Golf (and possibly the VW Camper and my 1980 Superdream, I’ll probably advertise those shortly) and buy a ‘work’ truck).
So, the Golf: Registered in March 1991 it is a Mk.1 ‘Clipper’ Karmann cabrio Automatic in Helios Blue. The last owner kept the car garaged at their holiday home and the MOT History shows they only did limited mileage each summer. It has done 67,000 miles but the last owner didn’t pass on much paperwork when they sold the car to my car trader friend. There are a couple of invoices for services etc in the past couple of years.
The on-line MOT history and the overall condition of the car and the way it drives suggest the mileage is likely to be accurate.
The car recently had a new replacement hood and was serviced and MOT’d last month. Although the tyres had plenty of tread, they were old and beginning to show signs of perishing, so all 4 were replaced with a new matching set on the BBS alloys before the MOT. The BBS wheels are in great, undamaged condition. The service just done included all the fluids and new brake pads. There were no advisory items on the most recent MOT Test.
There is a grey tonneau cover included with the car and it has a period Sony CD player. The interior is in good condition and the grey fabric seats are clean and undamaged. The bodywork is very good for its age (being garaged most of the time obviously helped) and polished up beautifully. There are one or two minor marks if you look closely, but far less than you would expect on a 30 year old car. The notoriously problematic Pierburg carb usually found on these 1800cc Clippers has been replaced with a new Weber. It now starts and runs like the proverbial Swiss watch.
These Mk.1 Golf’s are definitely climbing in price and good ones are hard to find.
The price I’m asking is the price I paid last month, just looking to get my money back and buy something more practical.
Not looking for a swap or p/x unless it’s a decent VW Transporter panel van or something like a Mitsubishi L200.
