Afternoon all
After many years abusing my wife’s Honda Civic with tip runs and allotmenting we’ve come to the conclusion I need something a bit more practical.
Mrs Bear has given me the green light to buy a pick up truck. As you can imagine there are conditions to the purchase;
Must be modern Must not be curse word
So I’ve compiled a short list;
Mitsubishi L200 Isuzu dmax Toyota hilux Ford ranger
I’ve got a maximum of £4 to spend
If anyone could suggest any others or perhaps there are disadvantages to some and benefits of others

Always Hilux, but there are some things to consider.
Are you likely to get a clean air zone fine where you use it (stupid eu5 or newer regs) and is your local tip ok with pickup trucks.
Ranger is always better value than a Hilux though.

Does car derived pick-up and 4x4 pick=up make any difference when going to the tip? Just wondered because I can get as much chod in my Cube as you would in a small van, but because its not actually a van, its not a van. But I guess a pick-up is still a pickup, even if its a..... Honda N600?

I’d rather have 4wd. I sometimes liberate wood from nearby woodlands.
I live near Peterborough so hopefully not going to be restricted by any eu Mumbo jumbo

Until you specified 4wd I was thinking Peugeot 504.
No idea if your budget would get you one, but it might hold its value as they are rare.

Has stated - check with your council if they will accept a private registered commercial vehicle at their tip facilities in the first place - a lot wont and they class pick ups & vans has commercial vehicles - secondly I would avoid the Hi Lux like the plague - its a 30 year old design dressed up to look the part - never have I driven such a uncomfortable vehicle - being my works supplied vehicle I had no choice - it wasn't a patch on the previous 4 x 4 crew cabs that I had run

Nissan/ Datsun King Cab, not much scene tax, not bad on fuel, not bad to drive. Rust like curse word.
My local councils tips either don't care what you come in with (the privately owned one) or have a permit system you need to apply for and print out - supposedly monitored by ANPR to make sure you aren't taking the micky.

I’ve never heard this council tip thing before? I have turned up in vans forever, they always say ‘why have you come in a van’ my standard answer is wtf would I throw all this curse word in the back of my car when I have a van at my disposal? They have never turned me away

I do like the nissan navara. It’s looks the part, the Nissan diesels seem to be indestructible. But don’t they snap in half?
In terms of the local tip I’ve seen people with vans, 4x4s pick up. I think generally anything without logos on

I never take my van to the tip......always use the wife’s car👍 The only reason ive quoted that is because its worthy of being a quote just for the sake of being a quote. And the irony of it is, its probably true.

Easy solution is to ring your local council next week and make sure you can tip stuff for free using a pickup. I know in Leeds you need to pay for a permit to use one.
Your list is very dependent on what years you're talking, once they got DPF's and the like fitted they're all curse word.
L200 had pretty naff engines and gearboxes and rot like mad
DMax would dump that much fuel in trying to Regen the DPF that they'd run on it.
Hilux have curse word gearboxes
Ranger's either have curse word heads (Mazda WL) or have 2.2 Transit motors which are gutless and have fuel injector faults which damage the engines.

I used to daily a T3 Transporter, lowered enough to conveniently allow it to skim under the local tip's height restriction (to prevent most vans from entering, pick ups were prohibited). Saved me a fortune on skips during a house renovation
